A few members have asked me to put together a run since there have been over a 2 years gap since the last one. Unfortunately due to my recent personal activity, I was not able to do so at the moment.

Now that my shop is partially back together, and work have provide a little breather from Euro-travel, I hope to bring offer this service again to bring some nice stocking for this xmas season.

The first run was done here. It took ~ 6 weeks from start to finish.
The last run took about 8 weeks, so there should be no different for this.

The service includes #8 mirror polishing, machine (lathe/mill) work modification, and most important of all the plating/deposition.
The surface coating are available based upon the substrate (based material).

For aluminum/brass/stainless steel/ti basically any metals we can coat them with Nickel, Chrome, Gold, and HAIII.
For harder metal (higher melting point such as stainless steel & titanium we can get to the really hard stuff such as TiN, TiCN, AlTiN, and the "C".

Here is a brief explanation of each coating.
Mil SpecQQ-N-290 Nickel Plating - corrosion resistance, surface hardness 46-50 RC.
Hard Chrome - bright & shinny silver, surface hardness 65-70 RC.
Bright Gold - 24K gold finish, great corrosion resistance (eg, brass or copper substrate).
Splash Anodize - Multi-color Type II anodization.
Ti-Nitride - 14K gold color, low friction, 80+ RC (2500-3000 Vickers).
Ti-Carbo-Nitride - gray/copper color, low friction, 90+ RC (3000-3700 Vickers).
Al-Ti-Nitride - purple/black color, low friction, 90+ RC, 2nd hardest coating available of the list behind diamond.
"C" aka Diamond - can we even afford this? most likely not!
HAIII - well how can you not know about this.

This is awesome! Now the hard part: deciding which lights to send off to modamag.......... :D

edit:
Jonathan,

I'll be sending in my LunaSol27-C. I'll be needing a little machining on some areas that were polished/dented prior to my ownership. I'm still debating on the coating, but right now it's between Diamond and AlTiN.

Thanks!
Joel

Darn... I was really hoping to see some reflector coatings in this thread. I am on a mission for rhodium plating.

You wouldn't, by chance, have such a hidden option?? :candle:

I'd like to reserve a Colossus head to be done in HAIII Black.Maybe I've overlooked it, but I don't see HAIII on the price chart.

Confirming order, based upon reply in post #14.

Rhodium plating will only buy you scratch resistance.
It's actually a very poor reflector when compared to aluminum sputtering.

Depending on the purpose of your light, the best three options are

Aluminum - general, most durable and low cost
Silver - highest reflectivity of the visible spectrum
Gold - highest reflectivity of IR spectrum

donn: Opps... copy and paste. HA is an option.

I am also interested in the HA coating prices.

Will you offer HA (gray/ natural) and HA black or just standard HA?

I'm gonna drive you nuts with questions!

There are (at least) a couple of FiveMega heads with integral reflectors; the 3.5" TurboHead and the new Version 2 deep reflector.

Can you either:

1. effectively mask the reflectors on these while coating the exteriors, or

2. re-coat the reflectors after plating the exteriors?

Probably a stupid question so please forgive my ignorance. We are supposed to send you our lights disassembled correct? I'm interested in having something AlTiN-coated but am terrified of having to reassemble it 8 weeks after taking it apart and remembering where everything goes.

I'm a little giddy at the moment. I have been waiting for another coating service so I can get some of my Leef lego's to match and get some Mag's coated. I have gathered a collection of FM's parts that don't exactly match all the lights and for them to finally match is going to make me so happy.

donn_: Colossus head will fall btw small/medium price range. There are some machining prep work that needs to be done due to the coating thickness changes.

Integrating reflector is a NO ... NO The risk way too high to recoat these. Normally you would coat first, cut, polish then deposit. It's done that way for a reason (ease).

I recommend you keep those custom as FM originally designed them.

QtrHorse: Only two color HA is available clear/gray and black. Keep in mind that HA color is very much dependent upon the duration of process. So if you have a piece that's black and want me to coat another separately, it will be close but never be 100% match.

Cuso: You can chrome directly over the Nickel. If you go HA route, the acid will eat through the nickel and require polish, recoat, and thread cleanup for conductivity.

brighterisbetter: All too familar question. See the other runs to get a better understanding how the process works. Addendum #4 added just for you :D

Wow very nice.

I may consider have one of my C2 chromed. Jonathan, I assume the Surefire C2 is considered to be small. I have a couple of questions:

1. From the way you've listed, I assume that HA is tougher than chrome. Will the chrome coating chip easily?

2. I assume Chrome is corrosion resistant as well from what I know of it, but I just want to confirm. Thanks.

What happens to etching with.... say a SS Exolion and Ti Carbo-Nitride coating and would the trit have to be popped out?
