I am practicing cut down & tap to re-thread solitaire,
tap part worked but the Vice Grip I used to grip the body slips & cut through masking tape, Electrical tape etc.

Any experience on what to use for a good grip of 12mm Soli. body without damaging? need enough force to withdand tap to re-thread.

Wrap with rubber band & try the vice grip again?

To hold things, I usually use a strap from a strap wrench and either use a pretty small vise or some other type of locking jaw. That's pretty much what I use, dunno about your situation. It holds fairly well. Nothing should really go through one of those straps, but I got some channellock teeth through once when I was *standing* on it.

Here's a cheap solution I use. I'm using friction tape here cause it's thicker but electrical tape should be ok so long as it's wrapped thick enough. Here, I'm removing a glued-on head but it should hold well enough for your task.

The tape + tubing clamp trick worked well for body tap,
but wasn't enough for the tail cap.

So, messed up the tail cap. But I managed to tap the soli. down
to 10180 size. Shown in between the peak Shasta N cell & AA battery.
