Question about bins and what they mean?

I can't find the thread that has the information about what each number/letter in the bin of the 5 watt means. I tried a search, but maybe I don't know the correct word/words to search for.

Thank you!

Re: the thread about bins and what they mean?

New question:

Here's what was in that thread:

Flux
U (average)87.4 to 113.6 lumens
V (good)113.6 to 147.7 lumens
W (jackpot!)147.7 to 192.0 lumens
X (you wish!)192.0 to 249.6 lumens

Tint (These remain the same for the 5W)
*It should be noted that these won't show as much discoloration as the 1 Watt LS's do.
1 (quite green)
2 (greensish)
3 (ok)
4 (bluesish)
5 (purplish)

Vf
R is 5.43v to 5.91v
S is 5.91v to 6.39v
T is 6.39v to 6.87v
U is 6.87v to 7.35v
V is 7.35v to 7.83v
W is 7.83v to 8.31v

Okay, so if the forward voltage is those numbers, how can people push 9 volts through it with 3 CR 123's?

How about a resistor?

Some people are using resistance, but as B@rt has suggested, people are really overdriving these things.

So important IS forward voltage if people go over by quite a bit?

The lower the forward voltage is, the higher the current will be at a given voltage, thus allowing more photons to be emitted. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
(I hope this makes sence. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif )

Orion,

The vf of the 5W Luxeon is when exactly 700ma is flowing through it at a die junction temperature of 25C. Don't take the BIN number too much at face value, Luxeons will and do vary from each other in color and brightness with in the same BIN code. It is just an 'average' for that production lot. Also, keeping a 5W junction at 25C is nearly impossible......

Orion,
I see you found my bin code info. I was going to post it, but now I don't need to. Good for you, enjoy!

Is this a fair question:

So, does that mean that if you have a V for the 3rd character [U3V, for example], you can run it more 'safely' off of 3 CR123's than if it were a U for the 3rd character?

Re: the thread about bins and what they mean?

Pretty much. It'll just be in "less" direct drive. Current won't be as high on the V as it is on the U with 9V...

Unfortunately, Vf for luxeons in a bin reel isn't exact by any means, so you'll still get some variance in Vf, even if the stated is U or V or T, etc...
