"Potential areas of application include reversing lights on cars, traffic lights and special uses in general lighting. They also include backlighting for displays such as TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) displays and illuminated advertising both indoors and outdoors. The LED can replace small incandescent lamps, can be used for illuminating facades and can act as marker lights for steps and escape routes. Thanks to these high-intensity units, mobile lighting systems such as bicycle lights can now produce levels of brightness that make a real contribution to road safety."

Looks awfully big compared to the die. I wonder if they will come out with optics for it?!? It looks like there is no dome on it, nor any metal reflector behind the die??

How small is this? It looks like it could be about the size of those surface-mount LEDs used in e.g. cell phone keypad backlighting. A 1W LED that small would be very impressive.

Edit: 6mm x 7mm x 0.8mm - just a tiny bit smaller than a luxeon.

6mm x 7mm, .8 to 1.8 mm high. It gets 20 lumens/watt, and is available only in red and yellow.

This is for those too lazy to follow the links in the lead article.

ROYGBIV In ascending order of difficulty. Red is simple, violet is hard. With LEDs, to make white, you must first make violet.

I am all in favor of more companies making high power white LEDs, but I hope that they make high quality as well. I look forward to their high quality, high power, white LEDs.
