Hi pobox1475
check out mdocod's great thread regarding battery's and light/battery compatibility there's lots of good information regarding this.

The old Surefire L2 I remember from old posts had a pretty tight body so 17670's on most lights would not fit so people often resorted to using 14670 cells which they reported worked quite well. Check out the following threads.

There is a output / runtime graph on CPF somewhere showing the L2 on a 17670 LiIon (or maybe it was a 14670), showing a ~30% loss in output (due to the lower voltage) with gracefully declining output over a few hours - IMO a much better solution than 2xRCR123 (far less capacity and borderline too much voltage). If I was going in this direction for my L2, I'd definitely get it bored slightly so it could handle the 17670 - my battery tube is slightly too narrow as well.
