I'd like to build or acquire an LED ring light for use with macrophotography. I'm an absolute novice when it comes to any projects involving electricity, but not shy about trying. Anyone that can help me out on this with regard to where I might find or how I might start?

Well are you looking for a Flash Ring or constant light ring?

I think a ring of 5mm LEDs behind a diffuser could work well for the later.

But if your after a Flash ring I have seen a homemade model that uses the camera's flash. It was on Instructables. Basically a chinese food container with a hole in the bottom and the side walls lined with aluminum foil. But thats for a point and shoot.

Give us some more info on your equipment and expectations.

How about an underwater one using 24 K2 LEDs running at 50 watts......

Of course one not requiring water proofing will be alot easier to make.
I'd forget about 5mm LEDs and use XR-E crees in a neutral colour.

If you will be using a tripod and shutter speeds are not too fast you could probably get away with 8 LEDs. But the more you have the better.
Even with all the LED's I use I find the shutter speed a little slow sometimes although being used in water does not help at all.
