This seems to be the secret to the high brightness low power LEDs - the use of a rectanglar die in the indium gallium nitride LEDs. Unless it is a distortion in the photo, the die is over twice as long as it is wide. The Nichia GS LED also has a rectangular die, but I'm not sure it is as long. It seems to me that a square shape would be more efficient use of surface area. Can anyone explain?

Here is a green 5mm LED (as good as my camera could do)

This is a white LED with red and green filtered out so the die could be seen

Just a wild guess, but maybe the rectangular die allows the heat from the die to be dissipated more easily into the thin leadframe? The rectangular die puts more die area over the narrow lead frame than a square one.
