Thanks for the great forum people! Can you help me here? FYI, I also posted this on the http://www.edcforums.com/ forum because for some reason candlepowerforums.com was down briefly this morning.

Thanks so much for any response. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. :)

1) Short Essay Question: What do you intend to use this light for?
I would like to carry this light every day including swimming. If the maratec http://countycomm.com/aaa4large.jpg were waterproof, I would get that. I would like a clip for carry and also to clip to my ball cap. It would be great if I could retrieve the light from my belt & turn it on with one hand, but that's not too critical.

2) What Region/Country/State will the light be purchased in?
[x] I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.
[ ] I am in _______(country) and __________(state/providence).

3) Price Range: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! broke
[ ] $1-15
[ ] $15-30
[x] $40-60
[ ] $80-$120
[ ] I have no limit!
This is not in stone....

4) Format:
PART A
[x] I want a flashlight.
[ ] I want a headlamp.
[ ] I want a lantern.
[ ] I want a portable spotlight.

PART B
Length:
[x] 1-2 inches. (Keychain sized)
[x] 2-4 inches. (Pocket carry)
[ ] 4-9 inches. (Holster carry)

PART C
Width:
[x] I prefer a long narrow light.
[ ] I prefer a short wide light.
[ ] Doesn't matter.

PART D
Weight:
Lights of a similar size can be very different in weight and may turn the perfect sized light into a paper weight. In general a lights of the same size will stack up like this; plastic and aluminum will be your lighter choices brass, stainless steel, bronze will be heavier. I won't put numbers here because everyone has a different weight sensitivity. For the purposes of EDC specifically I'll limit the choices here to the more easily carried sizes pick 2 sizes to represent a range of weight.
[x] Very light, can't tell it's there.
[x] Light, no heavier than a few keys or a small car remote.
[x] Medium light, about the weight of a AAA MiniMag
[ ] Medium, slightly heavier than a AA MiniMag
[ ] Heavy Medium, can of Coke
[ ] Heavy, PDA or small digital camera

5) What kind of "bulb".
[x] LED - more rugged, unlikely to burn out in your lifetime, less accurate color rendition, in general less output but more efficient (longer runtimes)
[ ] Incandescent - can be very bright, more accurate color rendition, burn out or can be damaged more easily, shorter runtimes, very noticeable dimming as batteries deplete
[ ] HID - like new car headlights in color, very, very bright, can be had in lights as small as a Mag 2 D cell but generally larger spotlight sized lights, no dimming turns off when battery depletes
[x] Don't care, just want the best fit for my needs.

6) What batteries do you want to use? Alkaline batteries are easier to find and less expensive but don't pack as much stored energy and are don't work well in cold temperatures. Lithium batteries have long shelf life (10+ years, great for stored emergency lights) and are not as affected by cold but must be kept dry and are more expensive. Rechargeable start expensive, but if used frequently pay off quickly.
[x] I want common Alkaline batteries. (AA, AAA, C, D)
[ ] I want lithium batteries. (coin cells, CR123, AAA, AA...)
[ ] I want a rechargeable system. (an investment, but best for everyday use)

7) How much light do you want? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).
[ ] I want to read a map, find a light switch/keyhole, or get around the house at w/o disturbing anyone. (5-10 lumens)
[x] I want to walk around a generally paved area. (15-20 lumens)
[x] I want to walk unpaved trails. (40 lumens)
[x] I want to do Caving or Search & Rescue operations. (60+ lumens)
[ ] I want to light an entire campground or dazzle an intruder. (100+ lumens)
I listed a range here, but the brightest I can get for a low cost and size would be best!

8) Throw vs Flood: Which do you prefer, lights that flood an area with a wide beam, or lights that "throw" with a tightly focused beam? Place an "X" on the line below. Sometimes a flood is better particularly closer up or indoors. You won't have to "sweep" the light back and forth to see what you need to see. You can also just set it down pointing the general direction rather having to point it right at that which you are working.

Throw (distance)----------------------X----------------------Flood/close-up

9) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims (like some LED lights). but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries. Understand that runtime is a function of brightness and capacity of your batteries. If you want 6 hours you'll either have big batteries or dimmer light, they haven't made a setup yet that lights up like the sun, runs all night, and fits in your watch pocket. wink
[ ] 20 min. (I want the brightest light for brief periods)
[x] 60-240 min. (1-2 hours)
[ ] 240-360 min. (4-6 hours)
[ ] 360+ min. (More than 6 hours)

10) Durability: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.
[ ] Not Important (A "night-stand" light.)
[x] Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood.)
[x] Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box.)
[ ] Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Self-defense, Survival.)

11) Switch Type:
[ ] I don't care.
[x] sliding switch (Stays on until slid back.)
[x] clickie switch. (Stays on until pressed again.)
[ ] momentary switch. (Only stays on while held down.)
[ ] rotating switch

12) Switch Location:
[x] I don't care.
[ ] I want a push or sliding switch on the body near the head.
[ ] I want a push switch on the back end of the body.
[ ] I want a rotating head switch.
[ ] I want a rotating end-cap switch.
[ ] I want a remote control.

13) Operational Modes: Check all that apply.
[x] A simple on-off is fine for me.
[x] I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
[ ] I want multiple light levels. (some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
[ ] I want a strobe mode. (blinks to show location.)
[ ] I want a tactical strobe. (Flashes rapidly to disorient an opponent.)
[ ] I want S.O.S. flashing

14) Is it important whether the body is metal or plastic/composite? In this case "plastic" and it's variants does not mean "cheap" or poorly made. In many applications a plastic bodied light is preferable, hard use and water resistance comes to mind; think caving or lights that get dropped or abused.
[x] I don't care.
[x] I want a metal-bodied light.
[ ] I want a plastic/composite light.

15) Special Needs: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Circle any below or write in your own comment(s).
[ ] Red (night vision preserving) filter
[ ] Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________)
[x] Waterproof – how deep: ___20 ft if possible. Would settle for 8-10 though. :)
[ ] Non-reflective/dark finish (stealthy/hard to find)
[ ] Polished silver or brightly colored finish (for easy locating)
[ ] Corrosion resistant or hard-anodized finish
[ ] "Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
[ ] Built-in second (or spare) lamp or filament
[x] Belt/Jacket clip
[ ] Holster
[ ] Wrist/Neck Lanyard
[ ] Kuboton/self defense features
[ ] Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Holy mackerel, you put a LOT of work into that post! I'm not sure if there is something that exactly fits your criteria, but there are some that come close.

Leatherman S2: clicky, water proof to 3 feet, 35 lumens.

lighflux LF2XT: fully programable, very bright, small. Manufacturer doesn't specify if waterproof or not, but with lights of this quality, it's kind of assumed.

Lumapower avenger GX: Great UI, bright, clicky. It has O-rings, so it's waterproof, but lumapower's website doesn't say to how deep.

eagletac P10a: Very bright, AA so slightly bigger than others. Very simple brightness adjustment, clicky. Rated IPX-8 waterproof, the eagletac website says it's fully dunkable at two feet for 10 hours, so it's probably waterproof to much deeper

47's preon: Brand spanking new, cree X-PG emitter, clicky. I don't know how waterproof it is.

Hope this helps :welcome:

Welcome to CPF, Jim. If you must have a clickie the new Preon may be the way to go. For a little more money (~$60) the LF2XT is my favorite. If you can stand a twistie I'd say just get a Maratac AAA or ITP EOS and save some money.

I don't know the LF2XT well enough to offer any comment, but I'd recommend a Fenix LD01 over the Maratac and the ITP. It seems like reliability and waterproofing are important here, and the LD01 in its various incarnations - while in some ways not as nice as, for instance, the ITP - has proven its durability over the years. I've had a Maratac stop working after I accidentally put it into the washing machine once. My old LOD P4 survived several such incidents with no problems at all. The newest version of the LD01 has also got a lower low than the original LOD and a bit more throw than the Maratac and the IPT.

Thanks for the suggestions! I really appreciate it a lot--I wish I could get all of the lights you suggested!! After doing more searching through your forum, I actually ordered the arc aaa. What do you guys think of that one? I really like the reviews on it & it stated waterproof to 100 feet. That was important to me. The small size and slim shape played heavily in my decision. That and there seemed to be lots of rave reviews about how durable it was.

I won't be diving to more than 10 feet, but I swim a lot in the summer & am often in and out of the pool and I just want to clip a light to my trunks and not worry about it getting submerged for hours at a time. At the same time, I don't want to carry around a divelight--they just seem too big and obtrusive and frankly...ugly. hahaha

Gosh none of you guys even recommended it so I hope I don't regret arc aaa! My only worries are it won't be blindingly bright & it's not clicky so it will be harder to use one-handed.

For future reference for myself or anyone else searching the forum, here's some links to the lights mentioned and my gut reaction to how I thought it would fit this use.

That leatherman looks cool! It would probably be a top contender for me, but I'm not sure if it's waterproof enough. Probably would be though.

the lf2xt says it's not suitable for swimming, but it looks like a neat light!

Lumapower avenger GX seems to be a great light with the 2 tail caps & most of the features I want. The only thing is that they don't specifically say how waterproof it is.

The eagletac p10a2 looks like a great bright light, and the waterproof claim is probably enough for me. The thing I didn't like was it was just a little wider.

the 4 sevens preon is a neat beautiful light, but it doesn't say how waterproof it is...

the itp eos looks great but I don't see how waterproof that one is either.

I was very close to getting that fenix due to anecdotal evidence that it's durable & waterproof. I just didn't see a waterproof depth claim on their site. It would probably be good for my use.

Just two days ago I received my Lumapower Avenger GX that Arcmay mentioned. I can't attest to longevity yet, but it meets all of your specs on that survey form, and so far, I like mine. The reverse hat clip is one of the reasons I chose it.

Here's some info on it: https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/235930

well, just to report back:

I got the arc aaa +P & it worked perfect for me. I also got the fenix e01 & that was great too! I have taken them both underwater for hours at a time to a depth of 3 feet & have had no problems whatsoever.

Thanks again for your help & for a great forum!

I use a Fenix LOD. I keep it on my keychain, though it could easily be in a pocket. I keep the clip on it so I can clip it on my hat anytime. One handed, tough, well made, water rated, and bright as heck on a 10440 battery, though meant for a standard AAA.
