Does the world really need another 2xAA Mag mod? Of course not, but that's no reason not to do one. The basic light costs eight bucks at The Mart, so why not?

The first step was a Kroll switch and a glass AR coated lens from flashlightlens.com.

The flange was cut off the front of the tube because space in the head was at a premium.

About 3/8" of threads were removed from the inside of the head to accommodate the pill.

There are enough threads to screw the head on securely but there is no focusing, but none is needed.

The pill was turned out of brass to fit this single-mode 17mm driver from e-lectronics.net:

A Q5 on a slightly trimmed 18mm board was fitted to the pill with thermal paste.

The reflector came out of a cheap 1xAA light that had already been cannibalized for its LED and driver. It had to be shortened quite a bit to fit in the head but the beam is surprisingly good – a nice spot with plenty of spill. It's not the best beam I've ever seen but it's vastly better than the stock light, brighter and more even.

Very nicely done! I never considered cutting the end of the battery tube off and boring the head out. Are you going to AA the head onto the tube or use a setscrew to hold it in place?

Thanks, PCC!

I don't think it's necessary to take extraordinary measures with the head. So far, everything seems to stay in place just fine.

Do you have a photo of the boost driver? The photo on the e-lectronics.net web link seems to be the same as this KD driver, but the KD product is a buck driver. In fact, the photo on the web link is also the same as e-lectronics.net's p-494 multimode boost driver.

Here is the driver that I linked to (I happened to have another on hand so I snapped a pic):

You're right that the e-lectronics site is a little confusing on this point! I've found that the owner of the site is responsive to email questions, though.

Hi Guys, Mark from e-lectronics here, sorry for the confusion on this AA driver. I initially only had this driver in my personal stash for builds but listed a few by special request from someone who I'd had offline discussions with; I posted a very limited product description due to the discussions I'd had. I had enough quantity that after the original requester bought his, the product description was still active which kind of left the rest of you hanging on this particular item.

As mentioned, if you have any questions about the products or descriptions on e-lectronics, just send me an inquiry from the site (contact link on the top left of every page: [email protected]) and I'll get back to you. I do my best to test all these product myself and list the spec's as accurately as possible... this driver was an exception.
