Based on the video frames at about 1:40, it looks like your L4 is the new one that uses a Seoul P4, and thus a buck driver. The original L4 used a Luxeon V LED and a boost driver.

The old L4's boost driver is based on the Linear LTC1872 boost IC, which has an absolute max voltage input spec of 10V. But being a boost driver, when Vin exceeds Vf the driver probably goes into direct drive.

I figured I'd make a video about this as i had not seen anyone do one before and i hope this helps people if they where wondering if they could use 2 RCR123's in a SF L4 but like i said in the video i take no responcobility if someones LED dies when they try it.
