Just adding that I know the best option is gonna be an Malkoff M30, but thats gonna be tough to get.

The Malkoff M30 will be a fine choice, but no longer made.

The Dereelight low voltage XP-G R5 does over 240 OTF lumens on just 2 AA NiMH cells. That is super bright off 2 AA cells. Here are my numerous tests with AA P60 drop-ins and I think I have the latest out in production now.

The Hosts I used was the Javelin.

The Dereelight drop in has great color as well. First R5 I've seen with no hint of yellow or green.

I think the M30 module would work nicely on 2AA Lithiums. I run it on 3xAA lithums for full power.

But my fav for the 2AA host is M60LL. I have it in a 3x123 18mm body and can use either 3x123, 2xAA or 2x18500.

Don't try a Malkoff M30 on three NiZn cells

I just received my first dozen nickel-zinc (NiZn) AA cells. Their nominal voltage and voltage under load are similar to L91 lithium primary AA cells (1.6 to 1.8V throughout the discharge cycle). I've been running my Malkoff M30WF (warm flood) on three Eneloops (1.2 to 1.4V each) and couldn't wait to brighten things up with three NiZn cells. The M30 is rated for 3V to 5V, but I figured, "Surely the M30 can handle 5.6V.

I was wrong. After 10 minutes, the Fivemega 3AA body became uncomfortably hot and the M30 began strobing.

I've now moved the M30WF to a FiveMega 2AA body, powered by 2 NiZn cells.

NiZn holds great promise in 2AA bodies. The new Malkoff M61 is now regulated as low as 3.4V....perfect for NiZn.

Personally I like the Solarforce 0.8v-4.2v dropins, especially for the money.

They are a bargain, but with 2AA cells they make less than 100 lumens. You need 3 NiMH AA cells to get the 200 OTF threshold.

It makes 50ish OTF with a single AA cell.

I like the throw they provide with an R2 driven by a 3 AA cells in a Javelin.

Great suggestion. I'm thinking 100 lumans is plenty. Anybody know the runtime? I actually re-purposed an M30WF. It works great, but I'd rather have it back in my EDC rotation. Does this solarforce have similar runtimes and vampire ability?

Amazon. Search for NiZn AA .
The 1-hour charger is considered smarter than the 5-hour charger. Among other advantages, it can charge 1 or 3 cells at a time, not just 2 or 4.
