XP-G in a Fenix L0D?

I am very happy with my Fenix L0D and am wondering if it is feasible to mod it to an XP-G.

One option is just wait for a new light. Unfortunately, the LD01 gets rid of the flash mode, which I use. I sent e-mail suggesting a return of the flash mode, but i am thinking it is unlikely that when an XP-G version appears it will have a flash mode. The LiteFlux has a flash mode but it looks hard to get quickly and easily back and forth between flash and steady. Hence my interest in an XP-G mod.

According to Cree, the XP-G and XP-E have similar packages, so there is some hope the XP-G is a solder-in replacement for the XP-E, which is what I assume the CE Fenix L0D lights use

I have a Q4 L0D, so in theory could get an extra 25% light by going to an XP-G. Not a revolution, but it would still be nice. Are there any close-up pictures of the CE L0D that would help me figure out if this mod is possible and if reflector changes, etc. would be needed?

The L0D uses a Cree XR-E which is not the same size as the XP-E so the XP-G is likely to require a new reflector and board. Your best bet is to upgrade to an XR-E R2.

>[The L0D uses an XR-E]

Oh, phooey, that did not even occur to me.

>[An XR-E R2, maybe.]

That would certainly be brighter, I'm not sure enough brighter than a Q4 I would notice in everyday use. In theory, the minimum spec for Q4 is 100 lm/W, for R2 114 lm/W, and R5 (the highest announced XP-G) is 139 lm/W. 15% is nothing to sneeze at, but the human eye being logarithmic it is not a big bump, not like a high-bin XP-G.

It seems an XP-G dice on an XR-E PCB (or "chip" or whatever it is called) would be an "obvious" way makers could up lumens without redesign, albeit with a different beam pattern. Any rumors of something more efficient than R2 in an XR-E package? I would be happy with more lumens and a broader beam.

Or, do folks have recommendations for 1xAAA XP-G lights with a flash function? (I don't care about SOS but am willing to ignore it if it has one.) The 4Sevens Preon1 may be an option, but my reading is Preon1 OTF ratings are similar lm/W to the Fenix L0D Q4 rated output, so not much difference. I assume part of that is marketing, part converter efficiency; I'd be happy to learn more details. Are there other 1xAAA XP-G lights with flash I should consider?
