Maglite LED Tailcap Hole

Sorry if this has been posted before, I tried searching to no avail. I'm looking to get a new mini mag LED (the 2 AA variety) but I would miss not having the split ring hole in the tailcap. Can I just switch it out with an older mini mag so I'd have a hole in it again? How come Mag stopped making this design? Thanks.

I've seen a version of the new multi-mode AA MagLED that comes with a tailcap that does have a lanyard hole. Pretty sure it was at a Home Depot in upstate NY so maybe they are getting out there. It was definitely a newer model because it came in a color other than gray or black.

They brought the split ring tailcap back; all the newest ones have it again.

The two tailcaps are not compatible, the version without the lanyard hole is slightly longer as well.

I suspect the reason they went back to the lanyard tailcap was because it's more reliable. It has less parts than the non-lanyard tailcap (which has springs on the side, known for causing trouble, and there's even a FAQ article on their site about troubleshooting it).
