Default Ban Bread Now!

"Smell of baked bread may be health hazard." --from an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer. The main danger, apparently, is that the organic components of this aroma may break down ozone. When are we going to do something about bread-induced global warming? Sure, we attack tobacco companies, but when is the government going to go after Big Bread?

That's like the guy that hits the $$$$lottery, then trips on the front steps, falls down and gets killed.... the 30 Y.O. no-body-fat athlete that jogs 20 miles a day and drops dead. I worked with a guy that died at 90 eating nothing but corned beef and cabbage all his life.

Trivia: In National Socialist Germany took place the biggest anti-cancer campaign in history. Treatments were discovered that are only now being accepted here. Any bakery that produced bread was required by law to produce whole wheat bread, since it was well known that no-nutrient white bread was N.G. for you. Hmmm, fresh baked bread.....tasty!

Just don't consume any of that dangerous Dihydrogen Monoxide with it.

Oh No!!

I have been checking out these sites and have just discovered that one of the main ingredients of Bread is the ultra dangerous chemical Dihydrogen Monoxide.

I just may have to stop eating bread after all.

I am truly sorry Mr. DavidW,

The EPA has long ago begun addressing the issue of air pollution from baking bread--from 1994.

EPA Web Site

[ QUOTE ]
SUMMARY: EPA is proposing to approve revisions to the California State Implementation Plan (SIP) which concern the control of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from bakery ovens.

The intended effect of proposing approval of these rules is to regulate emissions of VOCs in accordance with the requirements of the Clean Air Act, as amended in 1990 (CAA or the Act). EPA's final action on this notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) will incorporate these rules into the federally approved SIP. EPA has evaluated each of these rules and is proposing to approve them under provisions of the CAA regarding EPA action on SIP submittals, SIPs for national primary and secondary ambient air quality standards and plan requirements for nonattainment areas.

Years ago, there was a big issue that they were going to shutdown one of the bakeries that was famous for making Sour Dough Bread.

As many of us know, the government frequently exceeds any attempt at parody.

This comment made me remember an interview with George Burns.

"Is it true that you smoke eight to ten cigars a day?" "That's true." "Is it true that you drink five martinis a day?" "That's true." "Is it true that you still surround yourself with beautiful young women?" "That's true." "What does your doctor say about all of this?" "My doctor is dead."

Well, I guess this looks like I'm going to feel guilty about eating a PB&J from now on...If only we could bottle up those fumes and sell them as a bathroom spray, that could be a gold mine.

D'oh, I shouldn't of said that!

In the town I grew up in there was a bread bakery at the corner of 38TH and Yakima Ave. There was also a large (for this town) bus stop where several different lines crossed.

There was an awning over the bus stop extending from the bakery's "day old" store, and two fan-driven vents under the awning that pumped the smells of baking in the bakery onto the waiting passengers.

You would not BELIEVE the volume they sold from that tiny shop.

It was not at all unusual to see people standing, waiting for their respective buses, clutching full plaid-printed bakery bags and munching on a cinnamon roll or other "bread." In fact picture a couple dozen at a time all doing this.

This was also a major stop for the High School three blocks away ...

Where I went to college there was a "ye olde donut shope" and right next to it was a "ye olde laundramat" I think they were probably owned by the same people...

but anyway, the relation to topic was smelling them making donuts at 4am when walking home from a rehearsal one night. We banged on the doors until they came out and sold us some

I seriously know several people who swear that they won't eat or drink anything "with chemicals in it." When I bring up water, and... oh... everything else in the known universe, I'm simply greeted with a blank stare. Then "You know what I mean." Honestly, I do not. Maybe "Bad" chemicals? Oy. Time for some folks to take some intro to chemistry.

Darell, I know exactly what you mean- I am acquainted a lot of people like that.

I usually try to deflate their little baloons of ignorance gently; Sometimes I am pretty mean- I kept showing one girl the ingredients list on normal household foodstuffs and other items like shampoo---- she took it so seriously that she went months without washing her hair, and lost about 20 pounds (she was skinny to start with). In a related vein:

I was watching an excellent documentary program** last night;
In it, a spokesman for a breadstuff distribution firm*** admitted that bagels are actually week old donuts.

Law Enforcement Officials**** then confiscated all of the donuts and bagels in town as evidence.

I am still waiting for the results of this investigation. Will post any more info here as I receive it.
