Large Hadron Collider is Go

After a couple of failed attempts earlier in the evening, at the time of this post, scientists are now "resetting" the LHC and gearing up for a full 7 Tera-electron volt beam/collision, a world-record with the possibility of turning up some previously unseen sub-atomic particles.

They're cycling the magnets now, the ramp-up will begin in roughly 30 mins, and if everything goes smoothly, the beam will be fired in about two hours.

Currently they are dumping the beam and ramping down the system. Should be able to ramp up once they check systems inject the beam and blow up some sub atomic and atomic particles.

I just loaded the webcast, I'm not sure what's going on but they are toasting and drinking some bubbly.

They successfully collided a 7 TeV beam about four hours ago, the maiden run of many that will take place over the next two years. Looks like there wasn't a black hole that ended our existence overnight

It will take many months to analyze data from today's run and future runs; the machine will generate roughly 15 Petabytes of data yearly (15,000,000 Gigabytes), and while LHC has a shared computing program for PC users (LHC@Home), it is only for simulated runs and improvement - LHC has only their own servers to handle all the actual event data.

Collisions will continue over the next two years, then there will be a hiatus as the machine is built up and readied for the next series of runs at 14 TeV.

It's cool that it's actually up and running "full bore" now. I hope it yields some really ground breaking discoveries over the next couple of years.

Maybe it did, but we don't know it because we're falling into it's event horizon and won't realize it till we hit bottom :nana:

..or maybe we destroyed somebody elses universe?
be on the look-out for some sort of far off cosmic middle- finger fading out of existence..

How many lumens per watt does this thing give off?

It's just a handful of particles colliding, if it gave off any light at all, it'd be down at the atomic level, so there probably wouldn't be any light to see. So the LHC is the least efficient light emitter ever made, but then that means it's excellent at smashing particles and not creating light..
