I got this otoscope which has a 5mm LED on the pill. The brightness and the tint is not spectacular at all comparing to other halogen otoscopes I have.

I intend to modify it with the brightest 5mm LED.

My questions are
- What is the best 5mm LED and where can I get them (I'm in Australia)
- Is there any neutral white 5mm LED?
- What do you think about the circuit thay use in the pill and the type of LED there?

(I'm not sure where to post this, mods feel free to move)

You can try a Nichia 5mm NSPW500GS-K1-W-b1/b2 20 mA white LED.

With 44000 mcd seems to be (one of) the brightest at the moment in the 5mm class.

I think you can find a supplier easily if you do a google search.
Good luck with that mod !

I would use a high-CRI LED. The colour rendering is obviously important here. I like the Seoul Semiconductor highCRI P4s (CRI about 94) for clinical work. I have some here- are you in Sydney? And have you a picture of the rest of the otoscope? EDIT- found the linked pic... You will need a little more space for LED and driver.

Exactly, colour rendering is what matters that's why I try to look for neutral white LED. David, where can I find high CRI 5mm LED? I'm in Melbourne. So far I have looked at Jaycar and Cutter but could not find any yet.

Nick, did you ever find a solution to this? Were you happier with the modified version than the original?
