I need a very portable P60 flashlight, powered by 1 x 18650. So far the shortest ones I could find are 13cm long. Does anyone know of anything shorter?

Thats about it , UF501B is about that ... 502B is a little longer but still short .
If you had a lathe , you could maybe remove 20mm from that , maybe even push the 100mm mark ..

You have very little to work with.

P60 modules are X big.
The bezels are pretty much as small as you can make them.
The 18650 is Y big.

X+Y is pretty much fixed in size.

The tailcap is all you can play with.

This here is my smallest 18650 host, which fits a p60 pill. Click
However, it's not a real p60 host, since the reflector is smaller and the p60 pill fits without a spring and goes into the threads in the body.

Can I just unscrew the pill from one of my DX R2 modules and screw it into this host? If so, how's the beam quality?

The shortest P60 hosts I have seen was a lego...

Fivemega 1 18650 body + Malkoff VME/M30 combo.

The VME bezel fits all my P60 drop-ins, just need a MiniMag lens and off you go.

If you have a LU60 adaptor and match it to a A21 body+extention it is about 1in shorter than a 6P, but you need to bore the LU60 to 18mm.

Thanks, you are right. Before I give up completely, I am going to try a CR123A P60 host with a 16340 3.6V 1000mAh Protected CR123A Battery. This might be a little underpowered, but, hey, it's a hobby.

May I suggest a compromise? A FiveMega 1x18500 host from Nite. As Nite points out, "Single 18500 is only 17mm (5/8") longer than 16340 but well over twice the capacity." It also will deliver slightly higher voltage under load.

+1 for the Fivemega 1 18500 body. Let me get my stuff together and I will put up a pic of a Solarforce L2M, the Fivemega 18500, Surefire 6P, a Solarforce L2 & L2P.

The Fivemega 18500 holds an AW 18500 1500 mah cell with a Solarforce MC-E 3 mode and Z41 tailcap. The Surefire 6P holds an AW 18650 2600 mah powering a nailbender SST-50 single mode. All the others have various combos of R2 and XPG R5's in them.

Solarforce has the L2m, which is a 1xRCR123A body. Big difference is though, it can take 18mm diameter cells (2009+ version, old ones weren't bored wide enough).

Picked up some Ultrafire XSL 18350 batteries, which are rated at 1200 mAh, fits great. So you get the length of the 16340, but the about 40-50% greater capacity.

Okay, so I haven't tested the actual runtimes yet, but it can't be worse than a 16340.

Here are some lights for comparison. From Left to right.

Solarforce L2M
Fivemega 18500 w/Z41 tailcap
Surefire 6P 18650
Solarforce L2P
Solarforce L2

All lights have a flat stainless bezel ring except the L2 on the right. It normally stays in the car.

I hope this gives you an idea on size.

Thank you all for the help. Ekengle and Ricerocket, you have convinced me. I have just ordered the Solarforce L2M. It looks like it has the Cree XRE-R2, so it should be an impressive thrower. I might even put an aspheric on it.

I notice it is a direct drive, so I am not sure I should buy the Ultrafire XSL 18350 batteries. I am worried I'll overcharge them, or kill them through over-discharge. Any thoughts on this? I haven't decided.

On the other hand, if I put in a regulated P60 drop-in, over-discharge should not be an issue (I think).

PS I hope someone on cpf doesn't come up with something even better, as I've now already ordered 2 P60 x RCR123A bodies!

Where did you order it from? If you got it from KD then I think I know which one you ordered. I ordered one (L2M R2 direct drive high/lo/strobe) a while back and got it a couple weeks ago. The one I received has one of the counterfeit tailcaps on it and is not bored to accept 18mm cells.

KD SKU=S008288

I do like the direct drive module and modes. The strobe isn't as fast as most of them. I use the AW 16340 cells in it. It came as pictured with a wrist lanyard, flat stainless bezel. The tailcap has a recessed button. From what I have read on here that tailcap is not a true Solarforce. It works fine without any complaints though.

OMG, I ordered it from KD but in silver SKU=S008513. The tailcaps look the same. I was just about to order the 18350 batteries when I read your post. You might have saved me $6.64. Why do they sell counterfit caps? Doesn't paypal have some rule about vendors selling counterfits? I would be worried about those clickies oxidising. I had a few flashlights that needed WD40 transfusions into their tailcaps.
