Want to update drivers for my ThinkPad R40

I have some crashes and fixes are to update drivers in my IBM ThinkPad R40. I checked around and there is a DriverDetective dot exe that would help me do this. Is it safe to use this product. I am not real savvy about computers.

Start here:
Right-click My computer, go to Manage. This brings up Computer Management. If the left pane of that window, click "Devices." Anything with an exclamation point has no driver. IBM keeps old drivers around, so would the manufacturer of the computer (Lenovo made my IBM). I don't like trusty any "click to automatically download and install stuff" programs these days, although maybe someone's used that program.

Three different AVG miniports came up. Do I need to install these?

I do not use AVG for a virus scanner. I used to, but uninstalled it.
