I'm looking for a tripod that can expand to at least 6' in height, preferably 8ft. It will be used to hold up an indicator light as well as to provide low ambient light across an area

Is it possible to buy something like this

Without the light assembly?
No. You need a light stand. A Tripod supports a camera.
Google : Manfrotto AND BHPhotovideo AND Amazon AND 8' Light stand

These are decent stands, I have a few for my photo lights and like them.

8 foot stand:

10 foot stand:

Mine at the time were made in Italy. I believe at these prices, they are from China. Build quality is still pretty good IMO. It isn't a Matthews or Manfrotto contender and it isn't priced as such. There are less expensive steel models out there but the build quality and fit are so-so.

ahh, heh...no wonder I'm getting a bunch of mumbo jumbo with my results.
I figured tripod was the right word for something that can be collapsed for storage when I'm going somewhere in the car and have legs that fold out when I need to use it

I figured hey...it would be easy for me to integrate some sort of a 1/4-20 bore hole on my own light engine and have it mounted to a camera tripod, but apparently none goes high enough :stupid:

:thanks: for the recommendation, is B&H a dependable seller? I've seen their product links more than once but never ordered from them myself.

B&H Photo in NYC has been a good vendor for me. One of the good ones, whereas some NY mail order places are outright scams. Their store in NYC is pretty good, too. Note that they close for a large number of religious holidays, which can delay orders for a week.
