A vendors FAQ page on Novatacs says cannot modify led, yet I see
such modifications done by members??
Feasible to buy 85t and modify with newer xp-g/xr-e leds?
Would like more light,, but not maxed-out, as I wish to be able to hold on
for more than 10 mins. Present level selections just fine for me.
Any advice greatly welcome!
Regards, Chuck

Every manufacturer will tell you that their light is not user serviceable.

The XP-G mod on the NovaTac 85T is not too difficult is you have soldering skills.

  1. Open the NT, and remove the retaining ring holding the heatsink in place.
  2. Remove the heatsink, and protect the reflector from exposure to dust or dirt.
  3. Mark the positive lead to the LED.
  4. Remove the stock emitter by unsoldering the leads. Be careful not to use too much heat. The wires from the electronics may need to be bent out of the way to get the LED out of it's seat.
  5. Clean the seat very well with alcohol.
  6. Using an 8mm diameter copper shim, 0.030" in thickness, adhere it in the seat with thermal epoxy. Allow to dry for several hours.
  7. Reflow the XP-G emitter onto an 8mm XP-E (same as the XP-G) board from the Sandwich Shoppe.
  8. With more thermal epoxy, adhere the LED in place, observing the polarity. (Aren't you glad that you marked the polarity?)
  9. Slide the heatsink into the head, and verify that the LED is well centered.
  10. Allow the epoxy to dry overnight, or for several hours.
  11. Using pieces of tinned, stranded wire, connect the pads on the LED board to the leads from the electronics.
  12. Test for shorts with a continuity tester.
  13. Reassemble the light, and tighten the retaining ring well.
  14. Fire it up! You may have to recalibrate the light to recognize the battery.
  15. Enjoy the bright!
That is it in 16 easy steps. Have fun!
