I recently got a lathe and decided to try some mag moding. I've never used a lathe before so this was my first project. The black mag is a stubby mag C with the stock mag switch converted to momentary thanks to the tutorial on this site it was amazing. It is driving a SSR-50 on a custom heat sink I made. I used 20 gauge teflon wire and got 3.9 amps at the tail cap at DD (it has a D2Flex board in it) with the normal multimeter wires.

The silver one is about the same but has a tail switch instead of a mag switch (wasn't the easiest with the D2Flex, had to have wires go up the battery tube). I only got about 3.6 amps on this one probably due to how much more wire I used.

Let me know what you think. I would like to know what I could change to make them even better. I also just got a mill so may be able to do even more stuff when I get some tooling. Thanks for reading.

Volvo,

Welcome to CPF and great mod! I love the "zebra" MWG C. Obviously you've got plenty of machine work experience.

However, we need...

BEAMSHOTS!!!!!

and a few pics of your custom heatsink and tail cap mod....

Thanks for the comments.

I will try and get some beam shots tonight and put them up. This was actually my first time using a metal lathe. It was just a little 7x12 mini lathe also. I think I got lucky on how well it turned out.

What kind of lathe did you get? What does your setup look like? Some more pictures would be nice! :)

where did you get the lathe? What did it cost for a lathe like that? thanks. photos and beamshots please

I bought it on ebay it's just a chinese harbor freight style mini lathe I actually got it for about $400 bucks. I'm actually looking to sell it as I just bought a larger 3 in 1 machine. It works really well for smaller lights the C mags got a little tricky and the D mags were tougher as I could only use the inside jaws. I will try and get some pictures up of my setup and beamshots in the next day or so. Thanks for all your comments.

Did you buy the $799 harbor freight 3 in 1 lathe, drill press, milling machine?

Actually I found a shoptask locally on craigslist for $750. I think it is a little bigger than the Harbor Freight one it has a 17x20 lathe, it was heavy about 600-700 pounds. Haven't used it to much still need to buy bigger tooling for it. But the motor is more powerful than the mini lathe, I can do about a .01 depth of cut no problem on aluminum.
