Thanks for the pics, any idea if these will be upgradeable like the previous P60 based Z2s. I think i read on the forums that Surefire is moving towards this format for their other products such as the 6P as well i.e. the stratum

The Z2-S review is really well done.

I especially like how you took apart the bezel to review the guts.lovecpf

I think the downside is no more P60 drop-ins.

The plus side is you can stick some copper slug and an SST-50/SST-90 and get awesome heat transfer now.

Does the bezel Lego with anything else?

I've rapidly become a P60 guy. Love the interchangeability. Saves me from having another 10 flashlights sitting around. I don't look at this change as a change for the better. Sorry.

Oh, I was wondering if you could solve a mystery for me: Does the Z2-S also have the same bezel threads as the AZ2, ie, E-series compatibility?

That's cool, just don't buy one...

There is no obligation.

If you are a P60 guy this is not a good thing.

If you are all about brute OTF lumens then this heatsink design will change alot of things for us. Yes; the Moddoo Tripple will net 1260 OTF, but for the average folk you can just stick some more metal in there and 3 XP-G R5's DD and wallah.

This whole proprietary thing is troubling to me too. It's a way to cut the competition out and reminds me of a lot of stuff Sony has done over the years like that stupid memory stick/gate? chips they forced on people.

I agree that having the flexibility with the P60 system was a benefit. Saved money and space. Gave variety to one light. Now I guess you'd have to buy full expense bezels to get variety out of one light and those full head upgrades are never very cheap from SF.

I just wonder if it was really necessary to change to a full bezel for heat dissipation/more power or if it was a way to close the door on non-SF accessories. Maybe a little bit of both? I'm sure the new heads will be able to be modified, but it will take a lot more work and will need a new led emitter installed.

Not a fan of the new retention ring either. What's with all the little teeth? What do they do?

It's obviously a way to get better heat dissipation. The P60L as you may recall, was limited by having poor heat dissipation, and could not be pushed as hard as the competition which did not concern itself with P60 interchangeability, reliability, or longevity.

I know you're right but this new move still bugs me. :(

Just like how they are apparently glueing the heads onto the bodies now also.

I can understand this move, but I don't like it. Surefire is into longevity and reliability. Those P60 drop-ins probably don't have a great lifespan for the most part. I'm sure they did heat testing and longtime degradation testing and came to this conclusion.

The time when a CPFer can't get hold of an old-school SureFire to host their aftermarket drop-in of the month is the time they surely forfeit their status as a Flashaholic!

The explosion of aftermarket drop-ins was a reaction to SureFire's lead and I'll be disappointed if the aftermarket doesn't react to SureFire's new lead and play with this new style of host flashlight. And anyway, my immediate reaction is that this gives Flashaholics the ability to get more hands-on with modifications. I see this as a fantastic opportunity to empower Flashaholics to be creative rather than mere consumers.

Al :)
