I've noticed that recently alot of malkoff P60 dropins are being sold in CPFM, I'm personally confused with the nomenclature between numbers [like the difference between M60LL and M61LL] and it appears that the sellers have no idea either, and that products have only the name and price listed, with few to none between regarding the characteristics of the particular drop-in. I looked up and down the forum and it occurred to me that no index exists anywhere of these dropins. it was then I realized that Malkoff shuts down a webpage everytime a drop-in was discontinued, leaving me with 404s when looking up the specs

As far as I understand it, Malkoff's line of dropins began of with 6V flashlights. So everything beguns with the "M6-" prefix
To my knowledge the list expanded to M60, M60L, M60F, M60LF, M60LL, M60WF, M60WLF, before pushing into M61, M61L, M61LL, M61W, M61WL and then dropping into M30, M31, M31W...

The following is a loosely compiled list of available P60 drop-ins from his webpage, its easier to compare dropins without needing multiple tabs or multiple windows.

It was mentioned on the malkoff page that unless the dropin is a low output model "L or LL," Do not operate more than 15 minutes in a plastic type light.

I'm looking for info on M61 and M30 regarding the following attributes. I am confident to suggest that the only difference between M60F and M60WF [as well as M60LF versus M60WLF] is the tint...but I'm not sure about M30

None of Malkoff's original websites are working. Originally I wanted to compile a list of the different dropins in a graphical manner indicative of comparison between attributes. At this time however, information regarding the discontinued editions are not easily found. Most of the available threads are primarily discussing user experience as well as performance with different batteries or lights. It is hardly informative to serve the intention of quick references.
Its not so much a reference for others to see what new model they'll want to buy in the future, but instead for the benefit of the members who own malkoff's older dropins to know what they have on hand. Consider it an act to preserve a part of Malkoff history. :)

To make it easier for others who may use this thread as a quick reference, just copy the code and paste in the different attributes :thanks:

Thanks for doing this! I have several of the older generation M60 family of drop-ins, and decided to start collecting some of the data just to make sure I would not be possibly exceeding voltage in the future, and to be able to compare specs with the newer models, and didn't really think about collecting all of this info until I realized that a lot of it had disappeared from Gene's website already. I understand the possible confusion among new customers (you wouldn't want someone accidentally looking at the voltage range for an M30 when they were about to order an M31, for example).

If I may - shouldn't we include his proprietary designs as well, a 'Malkoff index' rather than just the Malkoff P60 dropin index? Or am I out of line?

'cause, right now there's just two models and two generations of one of them obviously, but I foresee that in the future there will be a bit of a proliferation there as well. It would be interesting to keep track of these as well in my opinion, the V1 Wildcats are already rare to see and find info on.

Anyone else see a use for this?

How about adding info for the Mag drop-ins as well? It's getting to the point where I'm having trouble remembering the details on the old hand-built copper MDs I have...I remember they had U bin SSC-P4 emitters at 240 lumens, but I'm getting foggy as to max voltage. 6V maybe? :candle:

See my link above. It lists some of the M*g drop-ins, too, although not the early ones you are referring to. Even though some of the M*g drop-ins are a little different now, the runtime listed for the 3-4 D cell unit is the same on 3 D's as the runtime listed for the current 3-6 D cell unit on 3 D cells. Even though the new ones are brighter, the current description lists the same throw in feet. Not every M*g drop-in is listed, but at least it's a start.

Drop-In Module for 2/3 D-Cell Maglite Flashlight

$75.00

This is a Drop-In Module for the Maglite® Flashlight which uses a genuine U bin Seoul Semiconductor P4 LED. This LED is rated at 240 lumens at 1000ma. The Drop-In module has a regulated driver. The current output to the led at 3d cells is 1000ma and 600ma for 2d cells.Full heatsinking of the driver and LED insure that the module can, and will, run at maximum output for extended periods. It will easily illuminate objects at a distance of 600+ feet and will light a 2 inch red reflector at a distance of more than 1/4 mile. The color is a nice white 6500K. This allows for excellent color rendition and the ability to blind an opponent. If you shine someone with this at night, within a 100 ft radius, they should see spots for a good 8-10 seconds.

The module retains the focusing ability of the flashlight. It operates on 2 or 3 easily available D size alkaline batteries depending on the flashlight body. The runtime is 3+ hours for the 2 D-Cell and 6+ hours for the 3D Cell at the rated output it will continue to operate at reduced output for several more hours. The light is great for distance and spotting.

One modification to the Maglite flashlight must be made before using this drop-in module, you have you cut the back end off of the stock reflector to within about 1/8th inch of the base of the cone. Just make sure not to cut into the cone itself when making the cut.

WARNING: This light is capable of causing eye damage at close range. Please use the light responsibly!!!

Do not run this drop-in module above its rated specs of 5v doing so will destroy the power circuitry.

I've wished for quite a while that Gene kept an on-line archive of his work. I believe some products evolved without changes in name or description too.

If you look carefully at the current site, you'll realize that some reviews for given products are actually for previous products, which might lead the unwary astray.

Thanks for starting this - it's an excellent project - perhaps Gene will be willing to provide definitive information.

I figured with only a handful of existing P60 dropins this thread could have been small and concise, though I would have preferred to see what I posted in a spreadsheet with rows and columns for easy reference:rolleyes:

I have one of the earliest Malkoff drop-ins, a Q2, aluminum body, heat sink potting, with P60 written on the it, not M60 but P60.

Throw is typically limited to approximately 140+/- feet. It will easily blind opponents at close range. It was designed specifically for use in SureFire 6P, 6Z, C2, and M2. It may or may not fit other models. The input voltage is 5 - 13 volts. Below 5 volts it will drop out of regulation. Below 4.5v it will shut off. The output is 500+ lumens. M60W MC-E Warm
This is the Malkoff Devices P60 style Warm MC-E flood beam dropin with solid brass heatsink construction. This design utilizes a Cree 20 degree optic. The optic produces an outstanding room lighting beam. Throw is typically limited to approximately 140+/- feet. It will easily blind opponents at close range. It was designed specifically for use in SureFire 6P, 6Z, C2, and M2. It may or may not fit other models. The input voltage is 5 - 13 volts. Below 5 volts it will drop out of regulation. M61 Mod to fit Surefire

This is the Malkoff Devices P60 style dropin with solid brass heatsink construction. This design utilizes a custom orange peel reflector designed by Don McLeish. The reflector offers a very nice balance between throw and spill. It is an outstanding room lighter and short to medium spotter. It was designed specifically for use in Malkoff MD2, Elzetta ZFL-M60, and SureFire 6P, 6Z, C2, M2 and G2 flashlights. It may or may not fit other models. The input voltage is 3.4 - 9 volts. Below 3.4 volts it will drop out of regulation and run direct drive. The output is approximately 260 measured out the front lumens. The current draw is only 650ma at 6 volts. The full output runtime is approximately 2 hours on two CR123 primary batteries with a nice long taper as voltage drops. It will easily illuminate objects at 350+ feet and will blind opponents within a 100 foot radius. The LED is a Cree XP-G.
