Is there any way to upgrade a Surefire U2 Ultra original from 2004 to a more efficient LED? I see the newer models have at least double the run time on the high end and triple the run time on the low end.

A good modder can put a Cree MC-E in place of the Luxeon V that was in the old one. Milky did mine and it is now a lot brighter and has slightly longer runtimes.

PS! Modded it is still the best mid sized light out there IMO

From what I've read, using the MC-E (wired 2S2P) is a great upgrade for the older U2's that use the LuxV emitter - the older U2 driver is apparently excellent match to the MC-E. There are some good threads here depicting that mod.

The newer U2's that use the SSC P4 emitter (with the lower Vf) are not as good of an upgrade candidate IMO. I know much less of these - the older ones sound like a better platform to me.
