HDS Twisty 140 Runtime test

Inspired by some of the runtime threads currently running I decided I would test out my spare HDS Twisty 140. It has the 18650/19670 battery compartment and is on factory settings. I am using an AW18650 2600 cell which my ZTS battery tester shows at 100% charge. It was freshly charged yesterday.

I am running the light at the lowest factory setting of approximately 0.3 lumens. I know Henry is conservative with runtimes so I am interested in seeing what this great light can do. The test commenced at 00:00 (GMT) on 7 September 2010. I will report back from time to time. Runtime is given at 4 weeks. I supect it will run longer. We shall see...

Good news - I can report it is still on at the 9.5 hour point.

Seriously I will most likely post about how it is doing on a weekly basis for the first three weeks at least. Then it should get more exciting.

We can't wait a week between updates! We'll go crazy! What will we do until then?

First week's update! As expected the Twisty is still running smoothly.

As a bonus I did a test on the HDS Clicky 100 CRI at 12 lumens using a freshly charged AW RCR123A. It ran for 5h35min until it shut off.

I am currently doing the same test with the HDS Clicky 100 CRI at 12 lumens using a Nextorch primary CR123A. So far it has been running for nearly 10h35min but has started to step down in the last two hours or so. Apologies I made a mistake - it had actually been running since 11:00 GMT so it was actually 11h35min.

I love these lights!

The High CRI Clicky finally started flashing 12h05mins after initially being set to run at 12 lumen. I am fairly pleased. The Twisty 140 is rated at 8hours for 12 lumen. The High CRI Clicky ran regulated for over 10 hours at 12 lumen on one CR123A cell before starting to step down. That is impressive.

Looking at the Ra Twisty manual, it shows the the 140 (141) with a lowest setting of 0.07 lumens. Maybe you have a different version?

Bullzeyebill,

I'm using the default factory settings. So a factory set HDS Twisty has the following settings:

High, 12 and 0.3 lumen

If you look the manual for the HDS 140 Twisty that would be settings 23 (141 lumen), 16 (13 lumen) and 5 (0.28 lumen). These are the factory defaults.

Setting 1 on the light table is 0.07 but you have to customise those settings yourself. The lowest setting I have on my Twistys is on my CR123A battery tube 140 Twisty at 0.10 which I have customised for midnight walks around the house. The one being used in this test is on default factory settings where 0.3 lumen is the lowest setting. I used this because my thinking was most people are likely to keep this low factory setting if they do not set it to lower levels.

Whatever the runtime on 0.3 lumens is it will be much greater on lower settings. I might test that in a future test but since 0.3 is the lowest setting I have kept on two of my Twistys that was the most useful one for me to look at initially.

I already tested that on my HDS U60 and Ra Clicky 140.

The HDS U60 ran for 45 days straight (1,080 hours) at the lowest setting of 0.08 lumens. Battery was Energizer CR123A.

The Ra Clicky 140 ran for 18 days straight (432 hours) at the lowest setting of 0.07 lumens. Battery was Duracell CR123A.

joema,

Thanks for letting us know. It is good to know how efficient our lights are. :)

Harry, sorry about my confusion, I was thinking of lowest factory "available" setting.

No problem at all. Actually you raising the query made me consider my criteria for deciding on 0.3 lumen as a first test. It was kind of an impulse initially but it does make sense.

When I was first looking at HDS lights seriously as a future purchase (was it two months ago?) I kept getting drawn to the 2 weeks runtime at 0.3 lumens on a CR123A cell and 4 weeks at 0.3 lumens on a 17670 or 18650 cell which most retailers were advertising. It has never been clear what cell that rating applies to. So given I have three Twistys now I thought I better test it out.

Funnily enough one of the things people often complain about with a Twisty is that you can't usually turn it on with one hand. This could be the solution - you don't bother turning it off! Just pull it out of your pocket or bag when you need it. :nana:

So it's the end of the second week. The Twisty is still going strong not that I am surprised.
