I ordered one of theese just for fun:

together with a host from DX I wanted to make a real pocket rocket. Nautrally the heatsinkt was not at all up to the power of this thing.

I made this heatsink from some copper washers and an aluminium rod, sort of a an aluminium core copper heatsink:whistle: This can be seen to the far right in the image. Since the LEDs are on the circumfence of the board this is not totally crazy I hope. I got some expensive arctic silver thermal grease to use instead of the cheap DX stuff just to be on the safe side.

The finished light:

1400 emitter lumens in a light this small isn't too bad. The heatsink really seems to work. It starts to get really warm already after half a minute. The light is kind of useless on high, something like 4-5 minutes of runtime with AW 16340. I will have to get some IMRs that can handle the current draw. On medium it is still bright but with only 300mA draw from the batteries. One 18650 on high gives 1.9A draw but much of the power is wasted in the driver so it doesn't feel optimal.

Finally some beamshots:
Fenix P3D premium 100 on turbo:

Aurora 2*18650 SSC p7 modded with D-bin emitter with 3.25-3.5V forward voltage:

Thaks for the kind words.

I was going to make a runtime test with AW 16340. Well runtime is 5 minutes, not because the batteries are used up but because the thing gets to hot to hold  Anyway by testing in short intervals it seems about 10-12 minutes in total. Not impressive, hardly usable as an EDC.

With one 18650 the whole thing is more sensible, gets warm but not uncomfortably so, lasts an hour and has output just short of my P7 but with better looking around the house beam pattern. Just seems a waste using this wonderful triple at under 50%.

My options as I see it is either AW IMR 16340 or UltraFire 18350. The Ultrafires have more capacity but IMR's are better under load. Anyone have experience wit the Ultrafires with 2A?

The best option would be a shot extender and AW protected 18500. The problem is that this host has a diameter just a tiny bit smaller than surefire standard, so normal extenders don't fit. If I only had a lathe (and somewhere to put it)...

With the short run time it'd be great for surprising people when clearing broken into vacant homes. Not so much as an EDC but as a nonlethal weapon ;)
