I saw a smallish [maybe 4" long or less] light I liked alot [just the appearance] It had a very "bumpy" exterior, clearly raised knobby texture that was described as having "aggressive knurling," which is what I am looking for--probably knurling that is among the most aggressive. Can anyone suggest specific models built along such lines?

IMO, Surefire has the most aggressive and useful knurling. Look for a single cell SF light. Not the E1b though.

The $15 Energizer 1 watt 1AA light sold at Target has a bumpy, aggressive knurling as you described.
Be sure to get the version with the stipled ("orange peel") reflector. It uses a Cree LED and is brighter than the earlier Luxeon version.

Seconding the Surefire knurling. The etching on my L1 is not super deep but it has the grippiest feel of any light I own.

The stores in my area (n. Illinois) have the Energizer 1AA lights, but have reduced their selection of other flashlights (and knives) in general.
