My 02 Safari is acting up(4.3l), it is my service vehicle and can't come off the road just yet.

It runs fine at normal city speeds, but I get an occasional and intermittent code that says my thermostat needs replacing.

The issues start when I ask the truck for power, it will not accelerate very quickly, the harder I push the pedal down the heavier it bogs and slows down, this is usually accompanied by what sounds like my lifters rattling, I can however achieve speed but it has to come gradually, very gradually. At highway speeds it will bog on it's own and drop in speed, to the point I have to exit the highway.

There is also a sulphur smell when I stop, the smell increases in proportion to the amount of bogging, and that is what is confusing.

It has been doing this for a month or so, I first noticed when it wouldn't pull my trailer.

Any thoughts guys?

It will make it to the shop soon, but right now I can not afford to be without it, not even for a couple hours.

Thanks!

David
