Hi,
I was a huge TK20 fan. I liked the balance and heft of the light, its toughness and that it did not have a very thin battery tube like most AA lights. I was very dissapointed when I called BG a few months ago and was told, 'we are waiting for the newer version to come in.'
Well the new version is here, and I am happy to say that I actually like it better. Here is a picture of the new light in the box:
The new light uses a R4 warm led, is brighter at 180L (I believe this is out the front) and also has the hidden modes based on the TK12 series. The secondary mode's low is not 3 lumens like stated in the manuel...I would say closer to 30 ( I bought 2 of them and they are both this way) So basically, it has the main mode of 180 then 45 Lumens accessed by a simple barrel twist, then 85/30 then 85/sos.
While I liked the TK20's rubber grip, I did not like how the grip would turn arround on the barrel of the light. This could be fixed with super glue, but still, the fix was needed. On the new light, the plastic is embedded into the aluminum..and no movement...it also gives this light a great feel...good balance and not too thin or thick...Here are some more pics:
Here are a couple of pics showing the battery tube thickness front and back...not quite as thick as the massive TK20, but thicker than most 123a lights.
While the reflector is smooth, the light has a great wide beam with decent throw for a R4. There is also NO donut hole, and best of all, the beam is not as warm as the TK20, but about halfway in between the TK20 and a normal Cree white, so it still shows plants better than a cool white light led, but the TK20 was a little overly incan warm for my tastes. There are no artifacts in the beam and the spill is brighter than my camera is showing here.
Here is the same outdoor beamshot I I try to always use. Camera is at f/2.8 1 iso 64
So, Overall, I really like Fenix's new light. It is much brighter than the TK20, it simply feels great in the hand, It would serve as well for someone who walks the dog, to a tactical light (momentary switch, over 120L, simple ui, rugged) for a police or security officer. My favorite thing about the light though is its great beam and perfect balance. I think I may actually like this light better than my new TK15. It is worth checking out.
Thanks for reading!
