led lenser p17 review

The p17 takes 3 D cell batteries so its fairly large with a head size about the same size as a D cell maglight. The P17 uses a prism type of lens to focus the light. There is no spill when in spot mode but this translates to more light in the hotspot. In flood mode the there is no dark hole in the middle like the maglight but puts out a smooth wall of light. Now this is what came as a big surprise to me. I compared the p17 and my solarforce masterpiece pro 1 at about 400 feet on some trees and was very surprised to see the p17:devil: out threw the pro1. it was not by much but it still beat it. i did not think the pro1 could be beat and other light in its class but i am happy to say in have a light that can throw farther. i guess the prism reflector system is very effective in collimating the light.
