Hi everyone, this is not my first post but figured I would
start a thread to introduce myself. I have always had an
interest in flashlights but until recently the bug has not
really hit. I have owned several lights over the years, you
know Maglite, Eveready, cheapy dime store etc. I always
thought the Maglite was head and shoulders above the rest
and I guess 20 years ago it pretty much was? It wasn't
until I bought my first Inova (XO Trios) that I realized how
useful a flashlight could be, I mean 30+ lumens and (if
memory serves correctly) 4+ hours runtime in a package
you can throw in a jacket pocket or a pair of jeans... WOW!!
I liked the XO so much I picked up an XO2, XO3 (both w/ Trios
lens) an X5 and a while later an X1, liked all of them and still
have all but the X1 (broken) and my girlfriend claimed the XO3 to
carry in her purse, what can I say, she has good taste.
Well, hear we are 5+ years down the road and I'm chuggin'
along with my Inova lights... I'm happy, until I spot a Dorcy 180
lumen 4 AA flashlight for 20 bucks. I say to myself, how can this
be? 180 lumens running off standard AA's for $20.00... NO WAY!
Needless to say, I took the plunge and picked up the Dorcy, ehh...
20 dollars for a new flashlight with a claimed 180 lumens, how
could I go wrong and I had to find out if Dorcy's claim was true.
I open and inspect the dorcy, lite-weight, cheap feeling, I'm not
impressed, that is until that night I take the Dorcy into the back
yard, click the switch and light-up my yard with beautiful bright
white light...awesome! Don't get me wrong, the beam is ugly with
a bright spot and not a whole lot of spill but, man... a light with this
much power for $20. If the cheapy Dorcy could put out this kind of
light there had to be more premium lights out there better that this,
my quest was on to find a premium light to try out.
Holy cow!! I started looking for high power LED lights and discovered
manufactures I am familiar with, Inova, Surefire, Steamlight but I found
many, many brands I have never even heard of before, Fenix, Olight, Sunway,
JETBeam, the list went on and on... my head was spinning, have I really
been in the dark (pun intended) this long??? OK, so I load-up on info via
the www. scanning manufactures sites, online stores like Going gear, Light Junction, etc.
watched youtube videos and (of coarse) read reviews on CPF.
I let all the newly found information settle-in and absorb for a few weeks so
I could make a wise and informed decision on a new premium ($75.00 +) light purchase.
I narrowed down my light choices and an online dealer, I decided I
would give Going Gear a shot at satisfying my newly inspired flashlight curiosity.
Now, I still had to choose what light I wanted? after all, I was willing to plop-down a nice chunk
of change for a light from a manufacturer I have no experience with. Long story short I take the plunge and go with a 4Sevens Malstrom G5 and I couldn't be happier, I really think this light is great, really throws the light!
So I have a new, super-bright high quality flashlight that suites all my needs, I'm completely happy with my purchase, Going Gear delivered the G5 super-fast and the Malstrom kicks major @ss!!
Now I can concentrate on my other hobbies i.e... guns, knives, vintage audio ect. right?...
WRONG!! over the last month and a half I purchased an Olight T25, Nitecore EZ-AA (new version)
and yesterday I received a JETBeam Jet III M R2 in the mail (which I think is great so far) and plan
on purchasing a few more over the next month or so. I guess I have to blame (thank?) Dorcy for
my new found interest in combating darkness. And thanks to CPF and it's knowable members for
supporting me... every addict needs friends to lean on and help justify frivolous, wasteful purchases
(not my words) on dumb flashlights. Thanks and sorry for the long winded thread.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, I have a question.
My Olight (T25) I have wasn't bright enough for me
(I mean can a light be too bright...I'm thinking no!)
so I decide too put in some 14500 3.7V cells in and 3-5
seconds later poof... it turns off. I put the AA alkalines
I originally had in it and nothing. I did remove the tailcap
and jump the negative contact to body of the light and still
nothing. So, my question is, can it be fixed or did my
stupidity render the Olight forever useless?
