If you trawl through the various Malkoff threads you'll see that Gene upgraded the driver recently, but hasn't updated his site.
That's what all the renewed interest in these modules is about.

Would you happen to know the new specs off the top of your head? I emailed Gene and he said that a single 18650 would work with the M91B, but would reduce output. What kind of lumens / candela / runtime are people seeing with a single 18650 and this driver?

    Hello edot &
I know this is a long thread, but if you are interested in details on the M91, I would recommend reading the last few hundred posts in this thread (or you can check the timestamp of the M91N Group Buy thread, and read this thread from then).

Hah, thank you Kestrel! I am working my way through this thread slowly. Thanks, thermalguy, for the post #.

Highly recommend to get in on this GB. It's my absolute favorite Malkoff drop in.

Thanks for the heads up on the GB. Very much so looking forward to getting this module. I've been running a Fenix PD35 (Gen 1 I believe) for years now. Just discovered Malkoff and have been down the rabbit hole trying to pick my first module these past few weeks. The combination of usable output, great beam profile (so everyone says), good spill, smooth hotspot to spill transition have me thinking that this module will be a great in the woods / deer hunting companion. Looking forward to testing it out.

I was just outside yesterday playing with my M91 and it still makes me smile. Crazy bright. Ton of spill very nice to have for a dark night walk.

GBR, after owning most of the Malkoff dropins through the years, I believer you're picking the very finest Malkoff module ever made.

Iíd pretty much say youíre correct there. Beam is beautiful. No rings Beautiful transition and plenty bright. And thatís not even touching the voltage range Easter egg we discovered!

What 16650 cell do you all recommend for the M91?

Just did some draw test with my two M91BNís
Both draw the same on 2X18650. Around 1.5 amps. On a single 18650 my first GB91 also draws right around 1.5-1.6 A
My new 91 is pulling 2.3 on a single 18650! Wow.

Ya my new 91 draws a ton more at low voltage. Off a single 3 volt primary my old 91 draws 41ma
    My new 91 110.

Wow....good info. I hadnít thought about testing that yet

Each one is now in a full host or head. Iím going to use the magenta-ish one this evening. I used the other one and the one from the initial group buy last night.

I will probably take a ceiling bounce measurement with all three of them sometime this week. I think my first measurement was with a single 18650.

This new Batch seem brighter on a single 18650 then the older version. At least to my eyes

Will you be using a light meter?

    Yep. It's an ExTech EasyView30.

I took some informal readings, and was getting inconsistent results, possibly from head opening and switch differences (one was in a Bravo host). I've rectified that by installing each into a Malkoff 22.3 head, so they can all use the same host for the measurements. My initial thought is that the 22.3 head allows for enough light to pass unobstructed to be clearly measurable, even if the spill size difference isn't great in actual usage. If this ends up being the case, then Gene's gonna be getting more of my money.

Iíve been using the magenta one by itself this evening, and doesnít bother me one bit.

I just performed a very quick sequential test with all three heads on the same host (with the same cell), and they're back to where they were initially. The one from the initial run gives roughly the same lux as the magenta one, and the new neutral one is a beast.

I will also be taking amperage readings from all three, with one and two Li-Ions.

Yes, I compared it directly to my M61W XP (5000K neutral) this morning. The M61 was drawing ~850ma on high, and the new M91BN was ~1.2A. I'm not sure what the exact state of charge was on the cell, but since this module isn't current regulated at 1xLi-Ion cell voltages it shouldn't be much of a factor. In comparison to a couple of other lights, it seemed to be outputting ~600 lumens at that current. It sure was a hell of a lot brighter than the M61.

Yep no change from last reading. My new M91BN is pulling 2.2-2.3 amps off of a single 18650. My old M91BN from the first GB is pulling 1.5-1.6 amps. This new one is bright as hell on a single lithium ion.

    Default Malkoff M91

I tested my new ones during lunch from a mostly charged AW IMR 18650, and just did it again now that the cell is full.

The magenta one pulled from 1.8 to 1.9 amps. The more neutral one pulled from 1.92 to almost 2.1 amps.
