I'm going to add yet another XM-L mod to the ever growing list. This one, however is very very low-tech. I've surprised myself with how much I like it.
I had a Malkoff Mag Dropin that I bought some time ago with a P4 on it, and had always intended to see how far I could go with it.
The XM-L seemed like a perfect choice.
A quick de- and re-solder, and the results are obvious:
I used a cut-down KD reflector, as the mag reflector was producing some really ugly artifacts in the beam (way well have been the way I cut the reflector, who knows?) Due to the choice of reflector, Throw is probably only good for 50-75 meters.
White wall shot. The ring you can see is not obvious at all once you're not pointing it at a wall.
On 3 fresh Duracell D Alkalines, I get 1.6-1.7A at the tailcap, therefore producing roughly 500 emitter lumens. I suspect this would only last for a minute or two at most before heat and battery sag take over.
I'm thinking this could probably run for 3-4 hours, on and off.
A D-Cell XM-L. Who'd have thunk it?
