I read that WD-40 prevents corrosion and repels water, so is it a good idea to spray it on the contacts of my flashlight and battery holder?

I personally would not do that. I use 90% alcohol on a cotton bud to clean my contacts. It works real well. WD-40 also has a Strong stinky oder to it.

I have an older metal detector (probably 20 years old) and the owners manual gives a grave warning about spraying WD40 on the printed circuit boards to dry them out. Apparently it will destroy a printed circuit board so do not use where it might unintentionally cause problems. I agree that alcohol would be better.

Google "DeoxIT/ProGold Twin Pack". I found some also at RadioShack.
It will clean and protect and restore old metal electrical contacts.
Good stuff.
