I've been following the t.v. reality series currently airing on Spike called "Coal". On the most recent episode, a coal miner was accused of stealing one of the companies headlamps used underground for mining and attached to a hard hat. Does anyone have any info on these lamps? Are they incan or led? How are they powered? They look extremely durable and seem to really cut through the darkness. I'm intrigued and was just wondering where would you get one and if they would even be practical for the average person? One of the supervisors stated it was a $300.00 headlamp. Any info would be appreciated.

The only miners cap lamp I've used (I occasionally have to go in mines for work) was an incan Wheat lamp:

They're durable, and yeah, they throw like that's their job. The lead acid battery sucks to carry around on your belt all day (although newer designs use a Li-ion battery). They're popular among coon hunters, and a lot of cavers used them until LEDs came around.

If I was looking to buy one, I'd watch e-Bay for a "KL6" Chinese Li-ion LED miners caplamp. There's a review here: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb...ofessional-mining-headlamps-(beamshots-added)

Used Wheat lamps when I worked in a mine for a while, and a few times on caving trips. Always wanted one of my own, but could never justify the expense.

Great headlamps - the original and still the best for miners. Rugged, reliable, and expensive!
