Hey guys, as the title says I'm looking for an alternative to my Maglite 3D.

I've got a Romisen RC-K4 which does the job for around the house stuff and a LED Lenser P7 which is great but doesn't have that real tight hotspot and real long throw the Mag is capable of.
Basically just looking for something that is a fair bit smaller than the Mag, real bright, somewhere around the P7's output, but has that longer throw with a tighter hotspot. Adjustability isnt a deal breaker but it would be nice.
Batteries, either run on AA, AAA or CR123s
As far as budget goes I can probably run up to about $100

Cheers

The new Fenix TK60 would be a big upgrade to the mag 3D. But since you want smaller how about the Fenix LD40 or upcoming Jetbeam PD40 that run on 4 AA's.

The UK SL4 runs on 4c cells and puts out 400 lumens. It is compact. There are many more suggestions available too.

Might i suggest the Fenix TK41? A bit smaller, runs on AAs, powerful, good spill, great throw.

Look at the Jetbeam III M. I have the 355 lumen version, but the hotspot is tight with good throw.

+1 If you want AA cells and amazing throw, get this light. Your 3D mag is not even in the same class with this light.

Some numbers for a quick comparison. From $25 to $130:

Maglite 3D incan: 37 lumens, 1 lux at 78M (flashlight reviews).
Romison RC-K4: 130 lumens (my estimate)
-----
Dorcy 41-4750 180 Lumen 4AA LED $25: 180 Lumen, 500 ft (Dorcy). Throw is better than my 3W MagLED (52 lumens, 1 lux at 82M (flashlight reviews)).
-
Maglite 2D LED (Rebel) $35 varies: 114 lumens, 0.25 lux at 298M > 1 lux at 149 M (Mag spec).
The Maglite 2D LED (Cree) is slightly brighter.
-
Fenix LD40 4AA Neutral White $62: 248 lumens, 0.25 lux at 207M > 1 lux at 103 M (Fenix spec).
-
Fenix TK50 2D $85: 265 lumens, 0.25 lux at 353M > 1 lux at 176 M (Fenix spec).
-
Fenix TK41 8AA $130: 800 lumens, 0.25 lux at 472M > 1 lux at 236 M (Fenix spec).

As mentioned above, The Fenix TK41 (or the new TK60) is the best option.

Great thrower, and just a bit smaller than a Mag 3D.

I bought a TK41 last friday, and it's plainly amazing. It easily beats any maglite I ever saw, even on the medium setting.

Today I'm trying to get it replaced though, due to its very green tint and a poorly centered emitter.
Just my bad luck, I guess.

Don't let this scare you off though. Unpack and test it in the store if possible, that will easily tell you if you got a bad one.

Just a quick question about the Fenix LD40 as people are recommending it. Is there a better light for the price? ($60 or so) I'm not sold on the battery carrier.
Any thoughts? I'd like the TK41, just can't cough up that much money right now.
Thanks!

I do not think you will go wrong with the LD40. I have one and does not seem cheap by any means. And if it made out of the same plastic as the outside which is German Byre bullet proof plastic, it will do quite well. And even if it isn't, the only time it could get hurt (in normal use) is when it is out of the housing. And beside being a good thrower you can buy the Olight M30 Diffuser Filter and have a great all round light. I love what the Diffuser Filter does to the light.
