Looks like your in for some 'fun'. By the time it gets there, expect more precipitation, than wind. Flooding potential will be high, depending on speed of movement.

Luckily, we're inland about 70 miles or so; I'm hoping the maximum wind speed will drop to around 50 - 70 mph. We're expecting about 4 inches of rain, but we rarely have flooding problems here :knock on wood: I know that the power will go out, but like all flasholics, I'm well prepared. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The biggest inconvenience is that we're on a well, so the toilet is only good for about 2 - 3 flushes after the power goes out. I'm hoping the power won't be out more than 8 hours or so.

Fill some containers with water and flush by pouring water into the toliet. Did that once in the Army, after a hurricane knocked out the water treatment plant. Had a 55 gallon drum full of river water that we used to flush with.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif Excellent idea, Roy. I have a couple of large containers I'll fill just in case. After that, I'll search for a good unread paperback to read by LED light when the power's off.

It's just after midnight here and Juan's starting to hit right now. Wind's picked up and there's lots of rain. It's sure to intensify soon. Lights are already flickering.

Juan has hit Halifax dead-on and should be here in a couple or 3 hours.

Well, looks like Halifax was hit fairly hard (1 dead, lots of damaged trees), but we escaped with high winds and plenty of rain. The power flickered quite frequently, but didn't go out.

With global warming, I've heard that we're going to have to expect more and larger hurricanes than in the past.

Now I have to empty all the water we stored up for the emergency... at least we were as prepared as can be....

"...An ambulance driver was killed when a tree was uprooted and crushed the vehicle as it was responding to a call near the Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax.

The ambulance was no more than 10 metres from the hospital entrance when the tree fell and the vehicle's emergency lights were still running when rescuers arrived...."

Always prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cat 1, still nasty enough.
