I have an HDS 120 exec. that I previously modded with a K2 about a year ago, it is a very nice light, but I don't think the K2 is being driven very hard, I noticed in my mag mods that the K2's prefer higher voltage to achieve full brightnesss, maybe mine have a high Vf. Anyway I'm thinking of changing over to an X-PE, as this seems to keep the throw I'm looking for, I'm sure this has been done before but I couldn't seem to find anything, anyone have any opinions or suggestions. The only real issue that I can think of is the need to create a slug to raise the X-PE to the proper height.

I don't know if Henry changed the circuit from the Novatac one or not, but the older Novatacs respond to lower Vf with higher current. E bin K2's have a Vf of 3.3 to 3.5-ish, so very high compared to XP-E's. Some of these mods draw 1.5A, which will fry the XP-E.

Photonfanatic.com has some UVOE K2's that might give you more light with the throw you want.

I am in a similar situation, wanting to upgrade some of my old EDC ultimate's, novatac's, and first run RA clickys. I have read of a few XP-g and XM-l mods with good success. However, Im tending to lean towards your thinking with the tighter, rather than floody beam style. Ive been out of the modding realm for awhile, so all the new choices of high end emitters are making my head spin. Good luck with the XPE, Ill be curious to see your results.
