Hi All,

I've looking for a camping/nightstand light and I came across the Fenix LD40. It's powered by 4 AA's... which I prefer over CR123's for a backpack/camping light because AA's are readily available even in the smallest of towns, and the same type used in the multiband radio is take along. AA also gives me the option of using rechargable batteries that I can use a solar charger while in the woods to

Claimed lumens: 4 light levels: Turbo (248 lumens), high (110 lumens), mid (43 lumens), low (4 lumens) and it has the unique feature of a disorienting 278 lumen strobe.

The disorienting strobe feature to me says it would make it a great nightstand flashlight.

Anyone have one of these?

Thanks!!

It is a great light. Good throw for a 4AA light, long run times, and a semi-neutral tint (cool side of neutral). I did not use mine as a night stand light because the low mode is a bit high, the light is a bit big, and the beam is too geared to throw for an indoor light. Don't get me wrong, it is a great light. It makes a much better outdoor light though. I use an SC50+ and SC51w as night stand lights (with a varapower 2000 as backup for "bumps in the night").

Here are a few threads about the LD40:

Yeah, I got one.

Strobe for a night light?

Like some else said, good throw, good runtime and my tint is whiter than my H51w.

But I really like it with a diffuser, makes for double duty. I use the Olight M30 diffuser with Velcro on the inside of the diffuser which makes it fit really well with an awesome soft flood that I like.

But alas, as much as I like it for a psychedelic night light it does not tail stand.

I have an LD40 and love the neutral tint as its cooler/whiter than other neutral tinted lights like my SC50w and MiNi AAnw. I used this in my summer vacation together with other lights but used it the most as the tint is great and has great runtime and modes. The only downside Like others said, it cant tailstand.

I recently bought one and it quickly became my favorite 'normal' flashlight.
The color, long runtimes and the not too heavy or bulky size quickly made me like it a LOT. :)

A friend of mine also bought one after I helped him out illuminating his basement while we replaced the lighting setup there. It's his first high quality flashlight.

I got my LD40 this summer and have used it a lot at work, now it's one of my favorite flashlights

The beam is not pretty but functional, and with a surprisingly good throw. It works well indoors too despite the good throw.

But if you want to access the strobe you first need to turn the flashlight on, and then hold the mode button for maybe half a second or so before the disco starts.

The LD40 is a great light and has impressive throw at that size. As it has been said, the low might be a little high for night time navigation (especially at home), but that depends on user preference too. The strobe should definitely surprise anyone invading your home, provided you have a few seconds to activate it... but the high would do the job as well.

It's a little heavy for hiking, if you mean 5-6 hours up and down a steep hill full of rocks and roots with a 12 pound backpack like I do. It could be considered a little big for a backpack light, but that is all very relative to how much space you have. As a camping light, the plus is it's very anti-roll -but it won't tailstand- and the runtimes on the lower modes are hard to beat. It definitely is an intermediate light intended for big lighting jobs.

Man, if you guys don't stop praising this light I'm going to have a hard time resisting!:grin2: Anyone compare this to the BA40 from Jetbeam? I'm assuming that since the BA40 has the XL-M it will be a lot more flood while the LD 40 has more throw. What is the lumen difference?
It's nice to see some new lights for AA!

There are bad sides too.. Donut holes have been reported on some LD40s and the battery carrier can rattle, the light looks very big to me as well. But the design and UI seems good. The Jetbeam will have a smoother and almost guaranteed perfect beam (OP reflector) with more flood and higher output on high modes. But at the cost of the neutral tint, throw and a secondary button to change modes.

There's quite a nice review of the LD40 here: http://lightreviewers.com/2011/01/fenix-ld40-review.html. Fit and finish looks top notch there.

The Jetbeam will be availible in neutral white soon.
To me it looks like the same light with some minor cosmetic changes. Same head, same body. exactly the same battery holder.
They changed the mode switch on the Fenix to a batteryindicator on the jetbeam and updated the LED and UI.

They must be produced in the same factory.
