Thread: 500 Lumen - AAA Flashlight (photos) - Work In Progress

    Quick update:

The circuit proto is done and ready!
    Received some XM-L's (4500K, 5000K, 6500K)
Expecting the working proto's next week.
Clip design is done, working on locking mechanism but its tricky, trying to keep the shape as is.

    First 2 protos will be:
    1x XML T6:6500K - Raw (bare aluminium, non-anodized)
1x XML T6:5000K - Anodized (black, same as non-working proto)

Then will try and get the 4500K the following week, pending any other tweaks.

I will send out the next subscriber update, shortly after the proto's arrive,
some other minor functional improvements expected too but I want to confirm that in the working version before posting to avoid any confusion.

    We are mighty close now......
    to getting to Milestone #1
    where this all began
    a sweet 500 lumen AAA
(and might I add, the worlds smallest 500 lumen flashlight)

    Counting down the minutes....
    about 8,640 (144hrs)

MBI POS I'd buy one just to tell people "It's a POS".

I like the T5 at 4500K. Will all these bin options be available on the first run?

    Thanks guys,
It's been great to have your feedback from the very beginning!

    About the T5-4500K.

Should be possible, but for some of the less mainstream bins,
I may have to adjust the price by $4~$5 depending on the cost/quantity.
Other than that, more than happy to accomodate.

Also, once the proto is here and tested (and some beamshots posted)
I'll set up an advance order form so you can let me know the option you want, and I can try to get enough of each bin for the first run.

R&D are struggling with the locking mechanism for the clip, because there is little room to add any threading at the tail section,
and they are worried if the thread is too thin, it may not be durable.
They asked about increasing the diameter to 15mm but I told them that can not change.
We'll explore a few more ideas but if it doesnt work out, we may just skip the locking mechanics for V1.

I think unlike some larger lights, where you clip them so the light is visible,
the torpedo is small enough to be clipped inside of a pocket so its not visible,
so much less risk of the clip detaching.

    tgwnn (unbelievably busy!)

p.s. the final surprise thing is looking awesome!

For me, this is no issue what-so-ever. Color is everything and I don't mind paying for my preference.

Any idea on pricing/availability of the IMR 10280? I'll be going for the adjustable body so I will be able to use it regardless but I am interested in the new cells =).

Everything continues to look great. Make sure to give your R&D team some praise and encouragement .

    Thanks rlcrisp,

availability for 10250 (thats the actual length), is a definite YES
pricing, still not firm as I haven't yet finalized the qty, and developing custom batteries is [very] expensive,
but hoping (fingers crossed) that I can make them available at $5.
If the pocket rocket is the Torpedo, then these amazing little batteries are the nukes that power it!

That's how i wear my ITP A3, with the light inside my pocket. A couple of times i've caught the detachable clip on something and it's flown off, had it been fixed to the body it would have been severely bent out of shape with the possibility of transferring enough force to the body to cause some damage, so detachable is my preference anyway. Even better if replacement clips are available.

And as i'm posting i'll mention that i too would pay a little extra for the right tint, tho i prefer cooler tints so the 6500k would be my choice here. And i'll definately be after some nukes! (To any government agent for whom that last sentence may be flagged, by nukes i mean batteries, not actual nukes.)

This is all very exciting, top job!

DO I remember incorrectly (man, I hope so) that full power will be on the IMR 10440, but will be lower on the 10250? If I am wrong, I can not WAIT for the adjustable body.

    Thanks MT,
I've had clips come off a few times as well. I'd rather lose a clip than a light!
Replacement clips are a definite YES
The 6500K tint is widely available so should be doable at the standard price.

    Well, yes & no
According to the original spec, the 10250's should only be 300 lumen but, they don't sag, even at 1.4A
so that means, they should be able to deliver 500 lumens (let's wait for the proto for final confirmation though).
I have the test data on another PC but I can run another test tomorrow and double check that.

That is awesome, awesome (did I say awesome?) news. If this beast can hit 500 led lumens on that little cell, I will be beyond ecstatic. I'll have to recharge every night, but that is JUST FINE with me!

Still pending a real-use test but judging from the batteries, it should be possible

    Hi Guy,
I would like to have one of each .
I am definately in favor of having a choice of more than one tint.
One for the Luminaholic in me, one for the Flashaholic in me, and one for the Neutrālisflashaholic in me
Everyone has different preferences and reasons for buying a particular tint based upon thier aquired experiences and uses. I also believe that having those choices adds extreme value to this great light

    Hi Tgwnn,

For your interest, i'm in also for 4500K version, with 4x10250 batts...
And i'm pretty sure a friend of mine would also take one, but not sure about the tint.

Could you confirm one point or two for me :
    - you'll provide both body (AAA and extendable) in the same package
    - you don't provide 14500 batteries, but you'll provide 10250 ones, correct ?

I wonder what will be the "special thing"....

    Great job,
    T.

    Hi taratata,

    Thanks for posting

Yes, both the standard AAA & extendable bodies will be offered.
Yes, I will offer the 10250 batteries for sale
For 10440's (li-ion sized AAA's), All going well, Im planning on offering IMR 10440's, that can power the torpedo as well
(these are standard IMR's, not custom made).
In the near future I do plan to get some custom 10440 nuke's made, rated at 10C
but perhaps in a couple of months.

He has said that at least for the CPF version of V1 he plans to include both bodies.

    - you don't provide 14500 batteries, but you'll provide 10250 ones, correct ?

He has said that pending pricing information, he plans to have custom made IMR 10440s and 10250s available for purchase. I assume you meant 10440 and not 14500...

I wonder what will be the "special thing"....

I can't wait anymore! Here come the guesses!

-Adjustable length spare battery carrier using the adjustable body Torpedo concept.
-some sort of diffuser that stores within the body, either a flat one over the lens or a tube that is very thin that stores around the battery.
-A lanyard either attach to a keychain or to wear around the neck.
-ummm I will have to think of more ideas...

    Sno4Life,

Thanks for answering and guessing about "the special thing"

    I'm itching to tell you,
but this is one thing that I do not want to see copied before the Torpedo is ready.

Im 800% sure you will like it

Ok - more ideas for the extra something:
-a presentation box to store the light in
-a very small trit vial in the tail or GITD trim of some kind

I'd better not bet because it could break the 1000 scale based on the in-progress photos I saw yesterday
