Dexlight XV Mysterious Missing Modes Mania

For many, many years, my now out -of -warranty Dexlight XV used to have 5 modes, plus the extra bonus Beacon Mode.

Now, for some mysterious reason, it has become a 2 mode light (medium and low), no matter if I use a AA NIMH or 14500 battery. So, if anyone knows what might be wrong, fire away please. (I did the usual clean, lube, inspect and curse procedure several times already.)

I'd like to add that I tried leaving the battery out of the flashlight in order to
perform a "reset", but that didn't work either.

I know it's not a big deal- the light does still work, but if I can bring it back to
a fully operational state, or find out what went wrong, that would be sweet.
