A2 + Copia Li-Ion 1800mAH battery, why can\'t SF do this?

Hi,

First off, this A2 release has been nothing but frustrating. I was just thinking that the 1800mAH Li-Ion battery and A2 would be the perfect combo with it's ditital regulation. The rated 500 recharge time will more than pay for the A2 in time.

I'm in the process of aquiring some of these batteries, does anyone know of a reason why te A2 would not work with the Copias? I would hate to damage the A2 somehow by using rechargeables. Thanks.

Oh, and Bart let me know that one model is 17mm and another is 18mm. Will 18mm fit the A2? or E2e? or 6P? I don't have a ruler with me.

The internal diameter of the E2e is 17.5 mm (measured with a caliper). Play it safe and get the 17 mm.

Cheers.

SurefireM6,

I have been trying to follow the Li-Ion battery saga but I think I have missed something. I was under the impression that what you can get is a single Li-Ion cell, 3.6 V that will reside in place of 2 123 cells (6 V)? If you can get 2 cells or one that is 7.2 V then it would seem you are close to target on supply voltage but whether the circuitry will accept an input voltage of either 3.6 or 7.2 is a good question that should be answered by design specs before an empherical test is done

Even if a Li-Ion cell would fit the A-2, you still would not be able to use it, since the lamp is designed for 6V...

The only SF lights you can use with incandescent lamp assemblies are those that use the same assemblies as the 6P and the 9P, since there are special 3.7V and 7.4V lamps available.
Of course a KL1 or KL3 with either E2(e) or M2 would work too.

I have not yet got a reply from the factory about absolute dimensions, but so far it has been mentioned that the LRB-168A is 18.5mm , and the LRB-168B "the same as an 123 cell" meaning ~17mm.

hope this helps,

edit: Don types quicker...

This would work great for an E2e and Kl1 wouldn't it? Also, what is the model# for the 17mm battery?

Bart & GloBug,

You have the same take on this as I do. I also am very interested in the E2e hosting both the KL1 as well as other potential buck/ boost drivers that can live with 3.6 volts and the ampacity of the Li-Ion battery. Even if the runtimes are somewhat reduced, the Li-Ion is a cheap and viable alternative; especially if it is protected from excessive discharge.

Cool Bart!

So I can run a KL1 in my E3e or UBH with two of the LRB9P's ?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have search for this type of battery a few months ago specially for KL1 on E2e. But I can't buy one so settled with 3 x NiMH 1/2AF with 1.5 hour runtime.

The one I found is from GP
http://www.gpbatteries.com.hk/Industrial/li-ion/technical.asp
See GP1767L160 with 1600mAh
2 x CR123A = 6 x 1.4 = 8.4W
1 x 1767L160 = 3.7 x 1.6 = 5.9W
Will have a pretty good runtime I think

due to the diameter being just 5mm too thick!!!! I'm tempted to just take the wrapping off and compress the darn battery! (J/K)

Ok, I guess the 3.7v would not work with the A2 designed for 6v. But it should work for the E2e w/KL1 or the LRB-150 with the 9P w/KL3.

So the question is: Is $60 worth it for a rechargeable battery for the E2e/KL1? That would make the whole setup cost ($70 E2e + $45 KL1 + $60 Copia) a whopping $175 for an 18lm single LED flashlight.

Glo Bug,

I have some batteries coming my way and I was also told by somebody who would know, that the single 3.6 Li-Ion battery WILL work in the A2

I did forget to ask how the LED's would be effected since they are on a simple resistive circuit. I don't know if the Vin is massaged by the circuitry for the LED's or if they receive their power raw. I guess we should have these answers one of these days.

BTW, if you have extra E3e's, send some my way? I only have one

Thanks!
