A friend of mine asked me about building him a red hunting light, I tried the easy way, a red filter over a 2.8 amp XM-L mag mod, the red filter killed the output. I saw that some Cree red LEDs are available, they don't allow very high amps, and are not too great of output. I saw some companies sell red and green "kill lights" so something must work, any ideas?

There are a number of threads on this topic.

Easiest way to build one that's good for about 120m of throw is to get a P60 host like a Solarforce L2, the red single mode Solarforce dropin, put a smooth reflector on it (available from Dealextreme) and change the flat glass lens out for a 28mm aspheric to collimate the beam tightly. Lens also from Dealextreme. That's what I've done with mine - used for shooting foxes.
