Thread: Brightest Key Chain Light?

    Default Brightest Key Chain Light?

I am a newbie to flashlights. I just recently purchased a Sunwayman T40CS (first in my collection!) and now I'm looking for a really bright single AAA or key chain light. What is the best and brightest on the market?

choose any AAA light which runs on 10440 and has a recent emitter. none of the AAA lights have the XML emitter so.

    iTP A3 Titanium XP-G S2

    google it.

For the brightest AAA light, it has to be the Peak Vesuvius. It's the only AAA light I know of that has an XM-L stuffed in it, and can apparently hit 600 OTF lumens when coupled with a high quality IMR 10440 battery.

I think etherealshade is right... at the moment the brightest AAA would be the peak vesuvius. Keep in mind that it is unlikely to provide very long runtimes at 600 lumens. Keep an eye out for the 'mbi torpedo' project. IMO, seems more interesting than the peak vesuvius.

My question is do you really need something that bright? There are a lot of AAA lights can give you 80-100 lumens for 45mins-1hour... quite a lot to choose from in this category.

Just going by the name of the thread, my guess is YES he probably needs/wants something that bright lol. It wasn't called "which keychain light has the longest runtime". I do however agree that the MBI torpedo looks very promising. I have a peak vesuvius and am not completely satisfied with it. I admit it was an impulse buy though. Yeah it's bright, but it is nearly 100% flood with it's tiny reflector, so it appears dimmer than other lower powered lights i have. It's pretty much only an indoor wow factor light due to it's flood, outside it's easily drowned out. Also, it's not that small, it's thin, but not that small.... it's actually longer (a few millimeters) than my Quark X CR123x2 !!

So, to sum it all up. As said before, the peak vesuvius is the brightest "keychain" light (approx 600 lumens). But if you really want to get use out of a light and not just have a WOW factor light, then i also suggest waiting for the MBI torpedo (approx 500 lumens).

Also Banzaiguy.... please specify. You say you are looking for a AAA keychain light. I take that literally. And AAA is a size. Do you only want alkalines? or are you open to rechargables? Because the vesuvius only works on rechargables. Preferably IMR cells, but works with less output on Li-ions.

That Peak light is pretty large for an AAA.

My advice would be to go with the itp A3, with the XP-G emitter. XM-L ones are rare and will have no hotspot, which may or may not be a bad thing.

As mentioned you can use an IMR to crank out a LOT of light...but it will get really hot really fast. If you want it for short durations fine. But if you want 100 lumens for an extended duration, use a normal NiMH or alkaline with it.

The IMR lights are impressive, but man... they will damage your LED and hand fast! :-)

I'm getting the torpedo when it comes out: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/...rk-In-Progress. It was announced long before the Vesuvius, and I think the Torpedo will be better overall. Peak does have the upper hand as far as experience, they have been around a long time and the Torpedo is a brand new light from a brand new builder.

High output is all well and good, but at the expense of runtime. Also to achieve these outputs, a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery is required and there are safety concerns.
Personally, I would not recommend something like the Vesuvius to a new member. No insult intended.

Get a AAA Olight, 4sevens light, or a Fenix. They all offer lights with a very good runtime and much higher output than a standard off the shelf light.

I'll throw in another vote for the iTP A3/Olight i3. I originally bought an iTP A3 R5 for a keychain light and liked it so much that I bought 2 Olight i3's for backups just in case the A3/i3 isn't available anymore. I have a Fenix LD01 which is just as bright but a bit longer and a 2-handed operation to turn on and off. The i3/A3 is easily switched on and cycled through the modes with one hand. I have it attached to my keys with a Nite Ize #0 carabiner if I need to use it for extended periods, I can take it off the keychain easily.

On a standard Nimh AAA, the Fenix Ld01 SS has been tested to be the brightest, other than the Peak. With a li-ion, its hard to say which will come out on top (not counting the peak, which would win easily).

Loomin, after a while you'll get used to seeing a new member's first post asking for the "brightest ________" (fill in the blank with AA, AAA, whatever). It's a natural first reaction after a lifetime of cheap, dim, $2 drugstore lights, and then suddenly finding an entire forum devoted to....... well....... all this .

However, more often than not, after the shock begins to wear off they begin to see the possibilities beyond just the "brightest" light, and it's our responsibility to help guide them along that path, as others guided us when we first got here.

So, with that in mind, banzaiguy, welcome to CPF!
Don't bother with the Vesuvius, it will melt your face, and there are a large number of other small, cool lights that you can enjoy without having to worry about getting blisters on your fingers (I'm serious, the Vesuvius should only be used by those knowledgeable enough to handle it in a safe and responsible manner).

To get you started, here are some excellent flashlight review sites:
    http://www.light-reviews.com/reviews.html
    http://www.flashlightreviews.ca
    http://www.lygte-info.dk/review/Reviews UK.html

There are lots of cool, small lights to look at. Don't be in a hurry. Spend some time reading those reviews. Also, learn how to use the Google Search Box in the upper left hand corner of most CPF pages. Leave it checked for "CPF Only" and it will give lots of relevant CPF threads. For instance, if you enter "Brightest keyring light", you'll get this page full of results:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=brigh...owerforums.com

Also, you might as well start learning about rechargeable batteries, because we use LOTS of those around here, so here's a good place for that:

600 lumens from a single AAA battery?!... that's impressive! I've never heard of that light before. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm open to both alkalines and rechargables.

You're absolutely correct... lol!! Since I am new, I am into the "wow" factor right now. Thanks for your helpful insight and providing those links with the flashlight reviews. I'll be sure to add those links to my favorites. Thank you!

Not a single aaa, a single 3,7V 10440. It wont work with a normal aaa.
