Hi Folks!

In the recent weeks, I developed the idea of a cheap, but neat little holder for a flashlight with an attached lightcone, that would turn it into a lantern.
Today, I found the time to build it, and I am quite pleased with the outcome.

The key parts ar two stainless steel cat feeding bowls, diameter 13cm, height 2cm.
There are plenty on ebay:

Also needed:
50cm M4 threaded rod
4 M4 dome nut
4 M4 wing nut
(all above stainless steel)
50cm Aluminium Pipe 6x1mm
Rubber grommet fitting the light cone. This fits perfectly on the Fenix cone, which works excellently with Quark lights, once the inner ribs are cut away to suit the slightly larger bezel diameter.

The coloums holding everything togethere are made from the aluminium pipe and the threaded rod. Cut the rod in 4 equal 112mm pieces, and fix the dome nuts with thread locker. Cut the pipe in 113mm pieces, and you are finished here.

Now we have to drill 4 holes with 4mm diameter in both bowls, I chose 70mm distance. To get round holes, which can be tricky in this sheetmetal, try the following: First drill with a 1mm bit. Put a block of wood under the metal, and align the hole with the 4mm bit. Then take a post-it sized cotton rag, fold it two times, and put it between the drill bit and the metal. Then start to drill with a slow feed. The rag will be drawn into the hole, preventing the drill from rattling arount. This leads to nice, round holes.

For my grommet, a 31.7mm hole is suitable. After scribing a circle with my caliper, I drilled a 3mm hole circle, clipped the strips between the holes, and filed the hole smooth. This is the most annoying task.

After that, insert the grommet, light cone and flashlight, and use the coloums to bolt everything together.

Now you have a neat lantern with a surprisingly small packing space.

Very nice!

One little easy fix I found for light cones(especially cones too big for the light head) is to put a few strips of velcro fuzzy side white tape down the inside of the cone where you insert the bezel of your light. This can provide a firm but soft interface for a bezel that is a tad too small for the cone.
