Just so i get this straight if i get one of say dw's or taskled's drivers
say hyperboost
LED's 7xcree xp-g
direct power of 9.6v to driver
and i trim the driver to 1.2 amps
will that also take care of the voltage?
since it will draw 1.2 amps i was worried about voltage not being regulated. as i'm boosting the voltage up to hopefully the 24.5v it wants ??

that really doesn't give me a definitive answer. also it gives that i can only have max of 7 amps input the 3 batteries i have are 16ah hooked in series. which makes 9.6v. the manual i see gives a nice chart and all but it doesn't really tell me if it will smartly pick the needed voltage of the led or produce voltage over or under what i want. To be sure i'm new to all this and am trying to put the pieces together in my head :)

being as that driver is a current controlled boost driver, you dont really need to worry about the output voltage, it should just ramp up the voltage until 1.2A is acheived and then hold around that point.

the charts are to show you the minimum input voltage for a given output voltage and current. i.e. 7 led's (24v) at 1.5A needs a minimum of 7 V

for your aim of 1.2A @24V (7 x xpg's) = 28.8W total power out
even with a 100% efficient driver youll be pulling 3 Amps from your cells (28.8/9.6 = 3)

so your looking at a current draw probably fo 3.5 Amps, hopefully cells with a capacity of 16 Ah will be able to handle that, but id double check

Examples on how to calculate battery/LED combinations:
Step 1: Determine output power
Power_output = Number_of_LEDS * Vf * Output_current
Step 2: Determine input power
Power_input = Power_output/efficiency
For calculation purposes we can assume efficiency will be around 90%
Step 3: Determine input current
Input_current = Power_input / Battery_voltage
Do this calculation for the lowest Battery_voltage you plan to run
Now, Input_current should be around 5A or less for optimal performance of Hyperboost. When running at high input power it is recommended to use the supplied thermal pad material to mount Hyperboost to a heatsink.
Some efficiency measurements are shown in the following table to give an indication of what is possible.
