Throughout the years, I've noticed some drama in the flashlight industry. Companies from one claiming that another had copied their design, disputes between OEMs and designers, one company claiming another makes inferior lights, dealers vs manufacturers etc.

Do you consider this when shopping?

I think that it's silly.
People have copied designs since the dawn of design.
In these days of mass production it could make a big difference for a manufacturer with lines of production machines but for a craftsman it should be a point of pride if others copy his design.

"FIRST!"

Usually not. But anyway most cpfers who have been in this hobby for a while buy custom lights or modified lights, more so than general stock lights so this doesn't affect them.

The title suggests you think "flashaholism" is primarily about buying flashlights, and that other aspects of the hobby are merely distractions from consumerism.

That's 100% right. The true joy of this hobby is building lights, modifying lights, improving on them, looking at beamshots of that 400W HID someone made, getting lights custom made or modified in a way not imaginable to the un-enlightened. Simply collecting OEM lights isn't really much of a joy IMO.
