Hi guys,

I was wondering, has anyone ever tried to bore an LX2 for 18650s? Is there enough meat on there for this?

Please share your thoughts/experiences.

PS. Does this belong in the customs forum?

There are four members on this forum who run these services. Check out precisionworks, bugsy, electronguru etc. They might be able to give you a quote. However by memory, the tolerances are not tight enough to bore it to 18.65mm-18.75mm (most machinists bore Surefires to that diameter). 17670 boring is possible though.

It is not possible to bore the LX2 tube for 18650. The outer diameter is not large enough, maybe boring for 17670 is possible, but also this is not easy / maybe not possible since the LX2 tube is very slim.

I'd recommend using 14670er AW cells. I have a pair of this cells and use it in my LX2, A2L.

Also this cells may fit, but I never tried this cells:

I swear i have seen 17670 bored LX2s for sale. 14670 might work but AW has discontinued his and good quality 14670s are hard to find. Get a caliper or a ruler and measure. If the tube is 16.57mm or more the ones in the link above should work. 2100mah sounds a bit optimistic though but if it's true you can get 3 hours runtime on high.

The LX2 head is standard E-series fitting so you can use aftermarket bodies like the ones made by leef and fivemega etc. The LX2 tailcap won't fit though so you would only get high.

I never got the guts to bore my LX2 body, even if I made rather nice lego with it...

Ohhhh... it hurts to look that AZ2 body messed up...

Well, I ended up sending my LX2 to be modded and the body will be sent out to be bored for 18650s. I believe he's done jobs like these are his precision is supposed to be top notch.

Not all Surefire bodies are created equally. Some of E series bodies including my LX2 can be bored out to fit a single AW 17670 cell. Other bodies I have cannot, as the walls are too thin. Taking the sticker off the cell also helps.

I hand ream E series bods for the 17670. The LX2 is the same as other E series bods in that respect.
As far as boring the E series for the 18650 goes, I don't recommend it. The thickness under the O-ring groove is pretty thin for the 18650. It could be done and then you could lay the light on a couch and sit on it and the head would probably break off.

The LX2 is a different animal from all the similar dimension E-series lights ... same dimensions on the head end, very different at the tail. Will add some photos a little later that may help.

Both the E & L series have a head groove dimension of .752"-.753" (19.1mm). I've bored a bunch to just barely accept an AW2900/3100, meaning a bore of .7285"-.7290" (18.5mm). This must not be a highly stressed area as none have yet failed at the forward O-ring groove.

Examine an E tube and note that the switch end necks down to about .550" (13.9mm). The battery bore is stopped just before the reduced area so there is no weak point there.

Look at the L tube & there is no necked down section, just a straight bore from head to tail. The tail O-ring is .720" (18.3mm) so the .728" (18.5mm) bore has to stop short of the O-ring groove. This pushes the 18650 forward just far enough that the head does not want to seat fully. No problem at all to bore for 17650.

Still exploring options on this & hope to have it figured out in a day or two.

There are also 16650 LiIon rechargeables available at one or two sources. They hace 2200mAh compared to 1600 of 17670 and should work without boring Your LX.
