[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]Well, with 110 on the Malkoff Junkie list, I may as well throw my name in because it's getting there.
Right now, I have:
M91 in an MD2 with hi/low
M61 in an MD2 with hi/low
M61W in an MD2 with hi/low
M61WL in a Little Twisty
M61 in a SF 6P, and
M61W in a SF M2
I'm sure there will be more in the future.
There's always room for Malkoff.

I know what you mean but a solution with the new MD2 is to really tighten the tailcap up then perform battery changes by removing the head. This has the added advantage of preventing the spring in the tailcap from scratching up the negative end of the cell.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]I'll give it a try.
The M61w (cooler neutral version) is first, the M61HCRI is second. I didn't set any values, just turned off the flash and used the auto settings, but it appears to be very close to what I see. The flowers are a bit storm ravaged. We had a couple of tornado's here in Alabama recently.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]I just received my MD2/ M61 High/Low light and man does this light just feel right. It is one very nice combo with plenty of light, spill and it feels solid. I like it coming on low (I know it can come on high as well) and then the high is plenty high. I'm thinking this might kick my SF LX2 out of my back pack, I really like this set up. My problem now is, which Milkoff product is next, maybe an M91 set up
?

I can compare the old MD2 with the new MD3, as that's what I have - It's only the switch that is different. The old switch is firm,
the new
Malkoff/McClicky switch soft press which makes sense when used with the tail shroud: It is easily activated even though it is rather recessed; this would not be the case if it was firm like the MD2. And of course being removable, the newer switch is more easily accessed for cleaning etc.
'Hope that is some help.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]I'm not qualified to start or run it, but I would love to see a Malkoff History thread, sort of like the Discontinued Surefires thread.
It seems that there are quite a lot of products that Gene has made, yet it's not always easy to track down the official specs on them. A history thread could pull all of that information together in one spot, so a person can figure out what the differences were between an M60W MC-E DD and an M60 P7 and whatever other info is out there. (I don't know the differences, besides the fact that they have different emitters.)
Right now, I've got a Wildcat MD4 V1 with four emitters on the way and I didn't even know they existed a week ago. I managed to find the specs on it, but it took a lot of searching and not everything was easily found on CPF and the Malkoff website has no information on legacy products.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]Yeah, it's a bit of a shame. I think one of the things Gene could do is to add the old products to his 'flashlight comparison' chart (clearly marking them as discontinued), so that owners of older products can compare them to the newer ones, and people like ourselves who buy them used know what we're getting into.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]I have always wanted to buy a Malkoff drop-in for my Surefire but has never done so since I prefer my lights to have at least two modes of output.
I have thought about getting an MD2 with Hi/Lo switch as well but the rather high overall costs, inclusive of the shipping (overseas shipping), has put me off.
That was until I saw the M61HCRI being offered. Couldn't wait anymore so I placed an order for the M61HCRI and new MD2 host with Hi/Lo switch. Got them from Craig at Illumination Supply due to the lower shipping costs.
Received the package a few days back from Craig and I am truly happy and delighted that I got my first Malkoff! I love it so much I have decided to buy another M61W for my Surefire M2.
My only gripe with the MD2 host is the very smooth knurling. Having been used to the kind of rough and bitey knurling provided by Surefire, I was a bit disappointed that the Malkoff knurling is so smooth. No offense to all Malkoff fans for being candid here. Even though "Made in USA" was stenciled on the MD2, the smooth knurling, coupled with the glossy black anodize, plus lack of an anti-roll bezel, doesn't seem convincing that it was really made in the USA. Of course I know it was but the look of it is just not convincing.
I would definitely buy another MD2 host if the knurling is improved, and it has an anti-roll bezel. Would even be better if it is available in matte anodize, whether natural or black.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]Anyone who has the new MD2 host, is there any battery rattle when using primaries? I ask because if the light can accept 18650s, wouldn't the diameter of primary CR123s be slightly small for it?
Pjandyho,
Out of curiosity, why don't you like the glossy anodizing?

I guess it's just a personal preference. If you have seen the matte anodize from Surefire, I am sure you would like it too. There are some rattle with CR123 batteries but it is not an issue. Not loud at all unless one shakes the light vigorously.

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]@woodentsick,
Yes, quite a bit of rattle which I eliminate with a couple of turns of 'Mylar' book wrap (or equivalent); just fix at either end with a small piece of sticky tape. Don't cover the entire battery, about 1/2" from the end of each cell and affix the sticky to the wrap and not the battery and you will be able to slide the cells out and reuse hundreds of times. I use RCR's which are small, about 2 1/2 turns and reuse. Some of the fatter CR123's wont fit in this sleve, so make another and save it. They last forever: In the 'Mylar' covering, both weights will work but the heavier weight is easier to use.
My Boy uses newspaper and it works just as well but you only get a couple of goes with it.

I'll use some material to wrap up the batteries when I get the light!

[h=2] Re: The official Malkoff Junkie thread.[/h]I suppose that there's a bit of difference in tolerances from batch to batch, but my MD2/3/4 have very little battery rattle with primaries. You would really have to shake that thing to get any significant noise.

Sounds like you got lucky!
But the main reason I strongly dislike battery rattle is because the light almost instantly loses its 'solid' feel in the hand (happened with my Quark
)
Do you guys have any knowledge or personal experience pertaining to the waterproofness of the new MD2? Malkoff's website states them as weather-tight

Then you could always run it off a 18650 and the rattling issue would be solved. You see, it is impossible for manufacturers to design a light for everyone. There are many who would like to run their lights on 18650, and making the light accept 18650 would also mean a bigger inner diameter which would cause rattle when one uses CR123s. Then we have Surefire which designed their lights to be just nice for CR123 but they make it impossible for the use of 18650. People would then have to resort to boring their Surefires just to use 18650 in there.

I used to take my MD2 in my 107F spa & play marco polo with my two young daughters & never had an issue so I would say you are fine! About 30 min under water with underwater use of the then Judco switch.
