Hi all. I have an old maglite that I haven't used in a while. When I took the tailcap off, I noticed some corrosion on the spring. What can I use to clean off the corrosion? Thanks!

Regard,
Frank A.

If the corrosion is from alkaline battery leakage, dissolve and neutralize the deposit with a mild acid such as chemical rust remover (phosphoric acid). Rinse well.
If the plating is gone, sandpaper to bright metal. Apply electrically conductive grease to protect against further corrosion.

I used to start with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. If the contact wasn't clean yet, I'd finish the job with 400 grit sandpaper. Never had any problems doing it this way, but now I just use red and gold deoxit since this eliminates the need for sanding.

I'd give it a good scrubbing with a brush dipped in vinegar, then make sure it was dry. Get new batteries! DeOxit is a good product to apply after it is clean.
